Oiling the joints of a SAK

So I found an old unused bottle of Victorinox multitool oil the other day. This got me thinking, do any of you SAK owners ever oil the joints of your SAK's? And is there any real need for it?

I periodically rinse out my SAKs to get rid of all of the pocket lint and grunge, and I oil them afterwards from a small medicine dropper of mineral oil. I find that oiling the joints does allow the tools to open more smoothly. A few drops is really enough.

I’ve oiled SAKs in the past but no, I do not. I’ll clean them with hot water and soap and a tooth brush. The steel is polished so it’s smooth. No oil attracts less dust and dirt.

Depends on usage and cleaning.

If you use it for food and clean it well, you will need to oil it much more frequently. And you will probably want to use a food grade oil, such as the bottle you found ;).

Otherwise, most light oils or gun oils should be fine and you won't need to use them terribly often.

I use the said oil for all folding knives. It nicely smoothens out the action when you let it sit for a while!

I do. I use a needle tip bottle and just put a drop on each side of the pivot occasionally.

I don't have an oil pen, I just use this to apply small droplets:

Does oiling or not oiling make any difference with regards to wear?
Probably more cleaning, get the grit out as it will add wear. Yes oiling does help but you don't need to go over board. Every so often give a bit of TLC.
As Lee D Lee D said about old saks, many of us pick them up on the secondary market, a bit of TLC plenty of life left.

I oil after cleaning. I use a needle dropper bottle with Lubriplate FMO 350-AW. It's non-toxic and works well.

I've found that a can of Dust Off with the straw attachment is very helpful for keeping multi-tools and folders clean. You can also use it to push a drop of oil or quickly evaporate alcohol.

Oh yes. I pour boiling water through the joints and then give each a drop of oil with a tiny punch (hot tap water works in a pinch). if you have a compressor blow the joints out before you oil. They work just like a new knife. Just clean and oil when the action gets all funky. One drop is all you need.

I give all my folding knives a couple drops of sewing machine oil at each blade's pivot (front, sides, and back) every month or two, and wipe off any excess after working the blade open/closed a couple times. I want the Backspring-Tang contact area lubed, as well.

I have an otherwise great condition Schrade Walden that didn't get lubed. The main blade is like a friction folder. Backspring doesn't move when the blade is opened. The pull is around a "2" at most. Lighter than even a Bick 301. I don't know if the backspring wore a dip in the tang, if the tang wore down the spring, or both. Either way, it is one I never carry.
