Oilstones and water

I bought a semi-decent oilstone a week ago because I lacked a coarse stone. However, since water is free and oil is not, I decided to use water on my stone, as well as keep it in a "water bath" for storage. Is this okay to do? If so, can I put more than one stone in the same container or should I separate them? I have kept my Soft Arkansas stone out of the water so far, but as long as it won't be detrimental I'd like to use water for that as well.

Thanks in advance guys

I do not keep stones whet but have good experience with water and soap on Norton India Cristolon stones.

You'll probably want to boil the stone in water to remove all the oil that the stone is soaked in. Using water on a oil stone will create a glazed surface that severely cuts down the abrasive material. So essentially you'll want to decide whether to use oil or water exclusively for that stone.

To tell you the truth, I've been having great success just using oil stones dry and scrubbing them with scouring pads when they seem to get clogged up. The stones act much more effectively I find.

Boiling it wouldn't hurt it at all? And I've been soaking it in water for a couple days now and the oil has risen to the surface, I keep changing the water out and there's less and less each time

Boiling wouldn't hurt it, infact it's the best method I've found in cleaning up a really clogged stone. Perhaps the surface oil is leaking out but at a very slow rate. Try out both methods and see what works best for you.
