I've been seeing this pop up on GEC's here and there. What exactly is Oily Creek Bone? What gives it the dark coloration?

I don't know for sure. I can tell you GEC did a very small parts run of 77 single blades with sheepsfoot last year that I believe were the first Oily Creek Bones. Then there was a fixed blade.. don't remember the model number H10 maybe. Then the beagles and coyote. I believe it's named after a creek near the GEC shop - not named for having any oil in the bone or anything like that.

awww man i was really hoping it was bone thats been soaked with oil and aged/preserved!

GEC seems a bit secretive about anything to do with their covers. I might be wrong about the oil, don't know... doubt it, but don't really know 100% for sure how they get the Oily Creek look. Either way I hope they continue with these covers. I like them.

I like the look too. Reminds me of the primitive bone if the cows had been found in a tar pit.

I'm all for different bone like that. I'd like to see more saw cut as well.

It's really nice but really hard to show the texture in photos. How it looks and glints as you rotate it in the light. Really wonderful.

I don't know how they do it but I like the looks of it. I have only seen pictures but I have a #14 single blade in transit with the Oily Creek covers. Looking forward to receiving it. Especially after reading the comment by Pomsbz above.

It does remind me of Primitive Bone too but it also reminds me of Frontier Bone. Looks like it might be worked in the same manner, whatever that is.

the oily creek bone #14 is difficult to beat as far as character - IMO

That Oily Creek Bone series from JSR is great.
