Ok – this may be a stupid question but why no propane fueled heat treat ovens? Why are they all electric? Assuming you could properly vent it and regulate the temp it seems the temp ramp up would be significantly quicker and running it would be cheaper. Just something I was thinking about using my kitchen gas oven. Seems all the gas/propane advantages that is evident in furnaces and home appliances could apply to a heat treat oven……

Also temperature control is much easier with electric than it is with a propane.
This is probably true for the most part, but my home gas oven keeps a consistent temperature without issue. Although you are only talking about a max of 500ish degrees in that application. But the concept is the same just 4 times the max temp and 1/4 the size.

It must have an exhaust, for knife making, the best I’ve seen are the drum/barrel forges made for heat treating.

I should have been more specific. Similar concept to a forge but enclosed and precise temperature regulation for multiple knives like an electric heat treat oven.
Yes, those forges exist. I know people that use them and keep accurate temps

It is usually called a muffle furnace. They are industrial size forges.

Using my two-stage PID controlled forge and a muffle pipe many folks have used a forge for accurately controlled HT.
