I need to buy gifts for 3 guys in my family. My father in-law, my wife's uncle, and my brother in-law.

My father in-law is in heavy construction and DESTROYS! knives. He uses them to do things like pry open the metal bands wrapped around pallets of mortar and then cut the bags of mortar open, etc. His needs are seriously hard-use. The problem is, my budget is $50 give or take. The other problem is, he won't carry anything but a folder (he works on a lot of government sites and they give him crap about any sort of "weapon" even though we all know it's a tool, they still do).

My wife's uncle is also in construction, though he doesn't use a knife nearly as much, or abuse one as badly as my father in-law. $50 here also.

My brother in-law is a cop, but he wears a suit/tie every day and likes a very small, unobtrusive knife. I'm thinking gentlemen's folder of some sort here, same price as the others. His EDC is a SAK Classic on his keychain and he likes it a lot.

So I'd appreciate any and all input. I have some ideas, but wanted to see what you guys (and gals) thought as well. I know a lot of you know a lot more about this stuff than I do!

1) Ontario RAT-1 or Leatherman tool. If/when he destroys the RAT, he's not out a lot of dough to pick up a replacement. With a multi-tool, he might choose a different approach to his tasks and spare his blade.

2) Maybe an old timey traditional like a Case Texas Jack in CV. For something a little more robust, check out a Boker Plus Trance--an excellent and affordable EDC type knife.

3) Believe it or not, the CRKT Centofante Tribute is a pretty decent gentleman type folder and would make a good office knife. Good-lookin' to boot! Of course, you can't go wrong with an alox SAK, either.

Good luck, OP! :)

I would suggest the Spyderco Tenacious for a pretty solid workhorse for under $50. The one I had saw a alot of use and never faltered. Maybe a Kershaw Leek for your Brother-in-Law or a CRKT Ripple. The Ripple is a great blade for the money.

Yeah, I'm thinking the RAT-1 might be ideal for the hard-use knife. It sounds like the other two might be getting something different (wife's call). Oh well! I try to buy everybody on the list knives but they all end up losing them or shoving them in a drawer. I guess we cant all be cutlery lovers!

Kershaw Needs Work or Cryo for the construction site,
Sanrenmu 702 or Kershaw Leek for the office.

Or you could get them all Spyderco Manbugs.
