Over on the "other forum" we were talking about Buck 300 series Stockman knives, and I made the assumption that because the early Camillus made contract knives were made to Buck spec's and during those years Buck used 440C, that the Camillus contract knives were 440C also. But we are now not sure that Camillus used 440C, so does anyone know????????

I just searched here and I cant seem to find any mention of steel. I also re read the articles by Larry Oden. I'd be willing to bet it was the standard steel that was used in regular productin knives.

Thanks, I had always thought it would have been the standard Buck steel since they were made to Buck's spec's.

What is this, stump the Buck guy day?
Thats a great question. If my memory serves me well, they were made of Camillus' standard steel. They were checked for hardness when they arrived at Buck. Any collection of 300 series would not be complete without one of the small cardboard boxes the knives were shipped to Buck in. Maybe Larry can post a picture of one?
