Thanks to silly irs its finally time to get something for me. I was trying to find the wanted to buy forum but I can't seem to find it. I was looking for like a AK thats slightly broken in so not to wreck someones brand new hard work. Then I realized I don't know the sizes they come in. So what sizes do the AK come in? Where and how do I go about ordering one? While I'm at it, if I want an all around HI that can chop, cut, take newbie handling which size do I want?

Welcome Knife Knut:)

The AK's come in several lengths. 12", 15", 16.5", 18", 20", 25" and everything in between. The measurement includes the TOTAL length, not just the blade.

If you are looking for a do it all chopper that pull down your pants, the 15" AK is a great all 'rounder. If you are wanting something bombproof, check out the 16.5" chiruwa AK. Chiruwa is just a fancy term for slab-tanged.

My advice to you is to do a little reading on the boards and give Yangdu an email. She'll be more than happy to help you out:)

Once again
Welcome!

There are a few approaches to purchasing Himalayan Imports products. The first is to follow the link at the top of this sub-forum's page to get to the H.I. online store.

The second is to watch this sub-forum for posts by Yangdu; they may be titled "Early Bird Special", or "Deals for [someDate]", or have the name of a particular knife that is being offered. Sometimes, these knives have cosmetic blemishes, sometimes it's just that they are being offered at a discount. These postings happen fairly frequently, but not every day, and they don't go up at a particular time, so it tends to be a matter of being at the right place at the right time.

Those knives are offered on a first-come-first-served basis, and the way to say "I'll take it" is by email. The email needs to be to HIMIMP@aol.com, have a subject something like:
BF: DOTD [date] -- I'll take the [knife name]

The body of the email needs to contain your contact and shipping information as well as how you will be making payment (I normally use PayPal) -- it doesn't hurt to re-state the knife that you want and how much it is. NOTE: just posting "I'll take the..." isn't good enough -- the first email to arrive gets it. Most people post a note that they've sent an email and what they're trying to get (as a courtesy to others), but not everybody does, so just because nobody else has posted doesn't mean you're first in line.

A lesser used, but sometimes effective, approach is to email Yangdu (at HIMIMP@aol.com) and ask if she has a specific model that you may have seen -- you never know, sometimes it's not posted because a shipment just came in, or there aren't enough of them to offer in the store.

And, of course, they sometimes even show up in the Exchange -> For Sale: Production Knives (Individual) sub-forum, although not very often. Most of the people who buy H.I. knives hold onto them.

I started out with a used 1/2" thick 15" AK I got from Uncle Bill as a fixer upper. Then came a 16" Gelbu Special from a Deal of the day and at the same time I got a 15" Sirupati which was also a used fixer upper. Then I think it was a 16.5" Chiruwa WWII and then a M43. Possibly followed by a 12" AK. Some where in there I ordered a Custom 25" AK that later got the name Godzilla. wrote a review and it became legand. It spawned interest in Big blades that others have since topped. Sure was fun to be one of the first people though. Then A year or two later I snagged a 16.5" WWII and 20" Sirupati at the same time. Added a 12" AK then a 15" Sirupati. I think thats all of them in the Khukuri catagory. Wait, there was a UBE in there somewhere.

Sold a lot of those including the 16" GS, first 15" Sirupati, 12" AK, M43, Godzilla and UBE. Still have the 15" AK second 12" AK, 20" Sirupati and second 15 incher and my second WWII. Some day I'll add more.

I tell this story to let you know that collections tend to grow and chance. So pick your first AK and have fun seeing what follows. I've only seen a few people get just one and even fewer buy some then sell them all off. Sad for them but lucky for us. ;) And FYI emailing Yangdu about a model that caught your eye or about an idea sometimes turns up some nice blades. I've snagged plenty of blades that way. :)

Heber,
Godzilla is quite a blade. Whenever I show it, people get...well...awed. Then I show them the website....
