For quite awhile I have been hearing talk of right and left handed fixed blades. Mostly i hear talk of it when discussing Bill Bagwell's knives or other fine handmade fighting bowies.
Now what exactly is the difference between a right and left handed fixed blade? Blade angle, handle thicker on one side than the other?
I know it must seem like a dumb Q, but I honestly dont know.
Thanks!

I don't know too much about right versus left hand fixed blades either, so thsi should prove to be an interesting post. But I do know that if you order finger grips on Stag handles (maybe other handles too, I'm not sure) on Randall knives you have to specify right or left handed. they grind the ginger grooves on only one side, so right versus left is important.

Maybe they meant the sheath?? Designed to mount on your left side with "reverse" retention straps. Other than that, I don't know.

No, the Bagwell bowies are definitely right or left handed, and they don't have finger grooves. I wish I could give you a definitive answer, but I can't. If you pick them up you can tell the difference though. I thought it was a bunch of crap until I was shown. Maybe some people that actually own some Bagwells will tell us what makes this so.

Also, most of the Bagwell bowies I've seen have no retention straps and slide behind the belt with a stud to retain it.

I believe that the Bagwell custom Bowies are somewhat offset or canted so that the blade on a right handed Bowie leans slightly to the left and the blade on a left handed Bowie leans or cants slightly to the right, starting from the guard. I don't remember whare I read this or why it is so, but I do remember reading it.

I would second Hugh's recollection here.
