Every once in a while you see a knife that is just so amazing that you get stopped in your tracks, that happened last night in Chat. One of the makers was showing this pic of a knife he had just finished. I couldn't help playing with the pic a little bit and I asked if I could post it here.

Would you care to guess who made this knife? The Damascus is his own.

If you know who made it don't blow it here, but of course your comments are welcome.

Once again no waggering and no prizes will be awarded. ;)

Rick Dunkerly does some really cool heat-colored mosaic damascus, as does Johan Gustaffson, but between the two I would guess Dunk.

That knife, by the way, looks amazing. Thanks for posting the pic!

get me phil.
I would say kit 'dont call me harold' carson, but i dont think kit makes his own damascus...second guess would be mike cooper. he has been talking about making a fancy folder for a while now,but he doesnt make his own damascus either.

shot in the dark? i would say ddr.

and no,i have no idea.

Wulf, if I were to guess I would have said Rick Dunkerly also. I would have been wrong.

MO, I don't think Kit does make Damascus and if Mike were making Damascus like this I think we'd need to have him cloned. ;) Sorry DDR is not correct either, although I think Darrel is going for his ABS Master smith stamp this June at Blade Show.

Is that one of your VIRTUAL knives?????

If so, damn nice. If not, STILL damn nice :)

No Neil, that's from a picture of a real knife I got last night. The only thing I did was to enlarge part of the Damascus pattern and use it as a background.

I would give credit to the photographer, but there wouldn't be much point in guessing after that. :D

I would say the initials are J. G.

Bob, if J.G. is for Johan Gustaffson, that would be incorrect. It's not J.G., (or L.G. for that matter). ;)

Appears to me to be something only a sick, twisted, deeply inflicted individual could create. I hope the illness is catchy.

This thread looked like it was going in a strange direction. It's good to see Anthony getting us back on track. Yes, Ed Caffrey is the correct answer, known as the Montana Bladesmith. Ed is an ABS Master smith who finds his time in the shop limited by his service duties. He made the knife shown above and this knife here all in a weekend.

Several people contacted me via E-mail with the correct answer and just didn't want to ruin the guessing on this thread. When I look at Damascus like this I think of the group of Montana makers first. What is it about that group of makers? One name I'm surprised wasn't mentioned was Ron Newton.

Well, this was fun. Ed, thanks for letting me post your pics. Outstanding work.
You can see more of Ed's work here:

I agree with Phil. It also surprised me that Barry Galaghger(sp?) was not mentioned. Ed sent me the original pic early yesterday (so it was hard for me to keep my big mouth shut and watch) :D.

Those Montana boys are something else!
