Counting down the 35 days until enjoying handgun freedom in the great state of AZ :):):)

After trying one out, I will absolutely be purchasing a Glock 19. With that said, I have ALWAYS felt drawn towards revolvers and, after looking at the gorgeous ones in the pic thread that some of you own, I have decided that I NEED one, especially since I already have a decent amount of .38/.357 for my Marlin 1894ss...

I have narrowed my selection down to a Ruger GP100 or S&W 686 as the perfect camper/hiker/plinker and have had a chance to handle them both - however, after a lot of research online I can't really come to a decision between the two - the Ruger seems to be a friggin tank that will eat anything, where the S&W has a superior fit & finish and trigger.

So.... I know that when it comes to guns (and knives) you guys can offer some damn good advice - for those of you have experience with both and price difference aside, which would you choose?

And please feel free to post your Bussekin and revolver pictures :D:D:D

Thanks!
-Harry

I dont know Jack about guns, minimal experience shooting. I have a G19 (LOVE it!) & SW 642 (like it). Earlier this week my distant cousin let me borrow this Smith

Didnt ask the model#, but Im pretty sure its a 600 something. If its the 686, buy one!!!!! After firing it, its a done deal. I will own one someday. Figured it would hurt my girly hand (first time shooting a magnum) but I was damn good with it, esp with .38s. Was fixed on a .45 as my next firearm buy, but that revolver changed my mind.

Good luck with the purchase man.

I'd go with the Smith.

I have nothing against Ruger revolvers ( I own 2 and only 1 Smith), the Security Six is one of the toughest revolvers ever made and the GP100 replaced it. But, when it comes to magnum revolvers, I think Smith does it better. Tighter cylinder lock up, smaller cylinder gap (from my experience), plus they've been doing it longer. Smith and Wesson, Elmer Keith, magnum loads, nough' said.

But, whichever feels better in your hand is the one to go with.

So, pistol and knife pictures

Smith and Wesson 657 Classic Hunter II (removed the rosewood grips), FFBM, and Rucki

Same S&W 657 with NMSFNO (pic taken around Christmas, that explains the fruity background :o )

And a 1974 Ruger Security Six .357 magnum, father of the GP100

On a side note, newer Rugers have warning labels engraved on them. IMO, firearms are works of art (well, most of them) and I have a problem with warning labes. They're a firearm, everyone should know what they do and what they're capable of, a warning lable is :barf: . Just sayin'. It doesn't make one shoot better than the other though.

Could look into getting an older Security Six instead of the GP100 too
OR........ don't buy a Glock and get both

My Vote is for The Smith. I have one myself. I had originaly wanted the ruger, but after playing with them both at the gun shop, i went with the smith and don't regret it. it might be a $100 more, but you can really see and feel the diference. the ruger might be a tank, but the smith will handle any load you feed it. and besides that, you can get the 686plus, which holds seven rounds and yes they make a speedloader for that! what size barrel do you want? I've got the six inch barrel with a red dot on it and i can tell you. it is my most favorite handgun to shoot.

Ruger is a great choice over Taurus I believe and if money is an issue. If you want to buy a revolver these days and not look back then get a S&W and be done with it. I have had many different makes and calibers and have all done well. The S&W has a better trigger which is a big part of the performance on a pistol and fit and finish is better. You will not go wrong with the Ruger but if you like it then the next step up is the S&W.

I've been seriously checking out both .357's as well. After watching You Tube vid's and reading reviews, and handling both, I'm still not sure.
There are some bad reviews about the 686, involving some barrel twist. Anybody see this first hand? I'd get both if I had the cash, but alas, it's one or the other.

The Rugers I've seen in the stores had no warnings written on them, but it's a small town/local store, they aren't the most recent examples.
The 686's I've held seemed awesome, better grip for my hand, I like the 686+ with a 3", just felt right to me.

I have a sw 686[6IN BARREL] and its the best hand gun ive ever owned.very accurate and easy to shoot!!
IT WILL GO WITH ME TO MY GRAVE:thumbup:

Gp100 vs 686.. Hmmmmm, gp100 shoots damn nice after a little bit of trigger work. The smith is nice out of the box. I personally think the ruger is built a skosh tougher than the smith. That being said, I would still go with the smith. The smith is a little bit above the gp100 on finish, and for double action shooting is IMHO just sweeter to shoot. I dont think you will see much difference shooting single action, but double action might be different. For resale I would buy the smith, If your going to give it away in your will I'd say the ruger.

Go with yout gut...

I voted Ruger, I've been running hot magnum loads through a Security-Six since I got it in 84, my future SIL has a 686, 7 shot, great gun, better trigger than my Ruger, but the Ruger is a tank, more like a quality tool than a fire arm. My other big bore revolver is a Colt Trooper, again with a 6" barrel, puts them both to shame.

Here's the Ruger with an old SH-E :D

I'd recommend the GP100 for now. Pick up a nice 686 later when you find a cool special or something with a bit of engraving on it. The GP100 is generic like the Glock and you can't go wrong with one for now.

I owned a nickel finished 686 in 6". We parted ways in about 1992 and I still miss that gun. I also have owned a G17, G19, G26, and currently a G36 single stack .45 they are great guns and very maintainence free but they are not the same fore arm the Smith is. The Ruger is a fine revolver I have had a late sixties single six and it was exceptional gun but it is not a 686. Only the Colt Python and a couple of other Smiths are of the same class of .357 as the 686. Can you tell I like the 686...... Just my two cents.

I don't know if it can help but I EDC a G19 with full faith and love the older 686. I know little about the newest production models. My experience is with the decade old 686. My favorite wheel gun thus far. I have other .357s but I like the trigger on the 686.

the Ruger is as strong as any revolver-they put alot of steel in their revolvers but to me, there is something about shooting a Smith and Wesson......especially the 686 model--smooth and accurate

One of the only things I regret in my 27 years is selling a 4" 686 that I owned about 5 years ago. I was stupid and traded it for a Sig. Now the Sig is gone and I really would like to have that Smith back.
