So does anyone else feel like a choil on the up coming stk knives are a waste? I think we all know that Jerry loves his choils but on a 3.5 inch blade is it really nessesary? My wallet got real worried for a minute, then came the pictures. Just looking for some honest hog talk here.

I prefer them, ease of sharpening and the start of the grind looks much more appealing to me. Not much into no choils and I dont like big ones on small blades.

eta-would be sweet having the option though, would likely get busse more sales too.

When I am cutting steak I really do not use that area of the blade anyway. So choil or "no choil" would not really make any difference to me personally.

I agree with you more options would definitely be good. As for a steak knife like Bull said not really a deal breaker for me but there are lots of small Busses models that I wish were without choil.

Since I am a chef I was thinking that the smaller of the two would have been a perfect paring knife, which means I would be using the low end of the edge a lot. But since y'all said it first I agree a no choil option on some if not all the sub 5 inch blade would be much appreciated.

Waste? No.... Looks great, easy to sharpen, can use finger tip in Choil if needed, area not used when steaking...lol
But, I do peel a heck of a lot of fruit & veg so would be quite happy without a Choil for these. Anyways, I'm in!

Choils add a nice look to a knife IMO. If the knife doesn't have a finger choil I like it to at least have a sharpening choil for well, ease of sharpening.

I just received a Boss Jack Proto with no choil... I have to say I really like the blade....I just wish now it has a choil...!!!!

Funny you should mention the BJ without a choil that is one of my grail knives...I just think the clean straight line of the BJ needs no Choil...Most Choils are appealing to me even the
small ones to facilitate sharpening just not on the BJ....

I too with the short ones would have no choil. I use that area a lot with veg prep. Even a tiny sharpening choil would have worked.

I think Busse and Swamp Rat do choils better than anyone. For the most part they are all useful in some way, be it for ease of sharpening or to make a larger knife useful for small tasks.

The only choil I really don't like is the one on the HRLM its to small to be useful as a finger choil and to large for just a sharpening choil.

I was thinking the same thing. Id prefer a choil on that one.

I prefer a small "choil" on all knives, not necessarily for my finger but just for sharpening.

Like this for example, its not in the way at all, yet it still makes sharpening easier.

On smaller knives I prefer a very small or no choil at all.
Between the Talon hole and a large choil it becomes a bit much for me.
I would like to see more designs based on the SAR5.

EDIT for dream knife:

.15 thick, full flat drop point SAR5 with a RMD shaped handle.

One of my ancestors fought in the very first Choil Wars back in early Medieval Times.

That battle went on for nearly two centuries with no clear winner and so here we are today.

I like big choils or no choil. But I don't mind scratches all up the plunge lines either. I'd rather have dull edge there than an elf choil.

Pretty close if you ignore the choil :D
