I stripped the coating today because it was starting to wear off after usage. However, I am not crazy about the naked blade. Is there a way to reapply a fresh coat on or How do I polish up the blade? Any suggestions would be great

I think I perfer a black coating of some type.

I dont know about duracoat ,I heard it takes a long time to cure.

I was thinking this today. They have a bead blaster at work, so if I ever get to the point...I'll do her and blue her.:D

Howdy,

Cold Blue, used for refinishing firearms, would work really well on the 1095 RAT knife.

It leaves a nice finish that you can "adjust" by rubbing the blued knife with steel wool.

Soak that sucker in vinegar!

I used the Cold Blue kit on one of my Mora frosts. Of course, it disappeared afterwards. Gave a nice result. But I think a patina would look pretty good.

As far as "polishing up the blade," I'd go with 800, 1200, and 2000 grit, wet sand that sucker down till it's flawless, then polish 'er up by hand. Then resharpen.

I'd probably just go with the patina though.

Isnt bluing toxic if you use the knife for foods?

I don't think so. The chemicals certainly aren't healthy. But you're using them to induce a chemical reaction in the surface of the metal. Once you remove the chemicals from the surface, it should be fine to use.

Anyway, who cares? You've gotta go sometime.

Put a hamon patina on it. :)

Demo'd on a Landi PSKK.

I just had a vision of a high polished izula w/ OD paracord wrap. It looked awesome in my head, which probably means it would look rubbish in real life.

Soak that sucker in vinegar!

Thats what I landed up doing last night. I let the Izula sit overnight in apple vinegar, when I woke up this morning it was a nice almost even charcoal grey color. I cleaned it up and put it back in the vinegar. I think I am going to leave it there all day and try to get it as dark as possible.
