so this is my first post but I've been reading through the forums for a couple of weeks now. the only two knives I own are a tiny bone handled pocket knife my dad gave me when I was like 10 and a swiss army cyber tool which is awesome when I'm working on electronics but way to heavy to carry around all the time, at least for me anyway. so I want to buy my first real knife and here's what I want:

a straight edge folder, it has to have a clip and be small enough to be comfortably worn in my pocket. I want to be able to open it easily with one hand. it has to be fairly durable and keep a good edge. beyond that I just want it to fit in my hand well and look suitably "cool" since I'm sure at some point I'll probably have to pull it out to compare with a buddies knife and I'd like bragging rights. thing is though, I'm a poor college student living pay check to pay check right now and if I spend more then 20 bucks then I'll probably have to skip a few meals so... is this possiable or should I just go knifeless till I'm rich and famous. and take into account that until I started reading in this forum I was under the impression that the highest quality knives were made by gerber.

The Spyderco Delica would fit you need nicely. For $40.00 plus shipping you will have a durable, stylish knife with a great steel VG10. Or look into a Boker Trance for $25.00.

I would check out the Byrd line of knives imported by Spyderco. MSRP on several of these is in the high $20s so you should be able to get a NIB Byrd online for about $20.00. New Graham Knives, Grand Prairie Knives, Knife Center of the Internet, Best Knives, all seem to be good online dealers. Byrds should meet all of your requirements and have good dependable blade steel as well.

A G Russell also does a nice 2" locking folder with VG-10 blade steel and titanium handles, but I don't recall how close that one is to your $20.00 price target. You can check it out on his web site.

Another alternative might be to check out the K-Bar Doziers on the Russell web site. IIRC, they went for something around $20.00 in the last catalog I saw.

HTH...

Another vote for the Byrds from Spyderco. You can get one with G-10 scales for just a little over $20 bucks. ($22.55 @ NGK) Solid knives with decent steel and an excellent fit and finish for the money.

I'll second the vote for the Trance. It is a heck of a good knife for $25. There are quite a few fans of the Byrd line of knives here on the forums. They are inexpensive and apparently put together well. I don't have one, but have read good things about them. Here's a pic of the trance, it's the one on the top.

Go for either a Byrd or a Boker Trance/Subcom. Both of them fit your description perfectly.

Edit- Jthomas got to it at the same time as me. The trance is a hint bigger than that picture, but that's just about the size. It works great, sharpens easily and holds a decent edge.

thanks for the replies. hmm, the trance looks interesting but I'm not sure how I feel about the half metal half fiberglass handle... out of everything I think the byrd seems the most like what I had in mind.

so just out of curiosity, if I had 500 to drop on a pocket knife what would I want to look at?

for around 35 usd on e-bay store you could find Spydie 3 Centofente, a good knife if you like them light.

for 500 usd, plenty option, depending of you taste!
the most known here you could go from special edition sebies, to nice Mayo in 6K or rare striders... and there are plenty other good folders around !:D

Most production "customs" like William Henry and Chris Reeve, and other actual customs. You could look at most of what you wanted to if it was G10 and any sort of regular metal. Once you start getting into exotic materials, prices go up, but with a bit of research, you'd have a long list.

im not a huge fan of cheap knives, i prefer the 100 dollar range knives, however, the byrd line is worth a shot, or some kershaws are nice as well. Id save up for a 100 buck knife in your position. Just put a few dollars away each week till you get enough. Just my opinion of course:)

Kershaw Dogfather II, it has G-10 scales decent steel, is a flipper and is a sharp lookin knife imo. 50 dollars.

oh, speaking of bucks, not saying I'd want this to be my primary knife but the buck x-track knife/multi tool thing did catch my eye. anyone know anything about them?

If you want a ubercool tactical folder try out the Sahara Jr. by Junglee. If their quality is still as good as when I had mine, its a great knife. AUS8 and made in USA last I saw, I've seen it under $20 online too (which actually bothers me...).

Otherwise I'd have to advocate a slipjoit of some type, or possibly another SAK. I often consider leaving my spydie in my desk and just carrying one of my old imperials (after all, they do cut better), but then I remember what happens when the zombies come ;)

I am new here today, but with this much info., I bet I could pick up a great one on ebay,in a short time at about $20 with some great sniping.
