and of course I haven't even decided between the classic or regular (small). Such a hard decision! I'm just curious, which one do you think is more popular?

And, where do you recommend that I purchase it from? Directly through CRK? Will they be able to send it to me immediately, or would I be on a waitlist or something?

I appreciate any input.

I'm fairly new to the Sebenza scene myself, however I have a small classic and a small regular.Although I enjoy them both very much, the classic's lock seems to be easier to disengage. The deeper thumb cutout allows more leverage on the lockbar for my thumb size.As far as where to get one,I'm sure some of the more experienced members will be along with some great advice in that area.I must say however that a good buddy of mine just had great instant service from Neil at True North Knives.

Good luck and I'm sure you will love either one you choose....Oh and by the way,...Go Redsox.:D

Besides the regular being easier to disengage the lock, besides that classic handle and blade are couple tenth inch longer than th regular.
If i'd had to buy a sebenza tomorrow i would go with the classic. I own both versions and classic is much thumb friendly.

Congratulations, RedSox.

I received my first (did I say first? -- must mean there are more to come) Sebenza on last Tuesday. I am very happy with it. I have basically been a Spyderco guy (and still like them), but the slim profile of the Sebenza compared to the wider Spyderco profile is much more friendly in the pocket.

As all the folks here on this forum have indicated, it's a quality piece.

By the way, I got the small regular at NGK.
:)

Great decision RedSox! You'll be very happy with the small Classic for a first Sebenza. It's ergonomically friendlier in the hand and a bit more blade bite. If you decide on a unique graphic or an inlayed Seb, check out...

Shannon(OFK) and Lynn(MKD) are great guys to work with.
;)

I love the classic more than the regular. I would suggest getting it from: 1. CRK 2.True North Knives 3. Plaza Cutlery.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just need a little more input.

I see that pretty much all of you prefer the small classic over the regular, but I'm still kind of leaning towards the regular. I prefer the blade shape and the overall shape of the handle, BUT I'm not too crazy about the ridges (the way it looks, not the functionality).

I can see how the classic would be easier to disengage because of the larger cutout for your thumb, but is it really THAT much easier? Will I have any trouble disengaging the regular's lock?

And what about gripping comfort? It seems to me that because of the larger thumb-cutout on the classic, it would be less comfortable to grip than the regular. Your opinions?

Thanks!

I'm probably an outlier in my opinion. I've always preferred the large size -- just fits my hand better, and I have pretty average sized hands.

I had been an original sebenza carrier for a couple years, and remember when Chris designed the new model (now called the regular). I preferred every change -- the smoother appearance, the fuller belly, and the grip feel. The new design became my EDC, and I've never looked back. Having said that, if I were a coke drinker, perhaps I would have preferred the New Coke in 1985 . . . ;)

From my perspective, both models open equally as easily, and I've never noticed any design differentiation in this respect until reading this thread.

There is one reason I've considered switching to a classic -- I like the micarta inlays, and currently they are only offered on the classic frame.

Good luck in your selection. As others have said, you simply can't go wrong.

As I've mentioned before, I like buying directly from CRK when I can. I was just in the CRK office last week, and they were in the unusual circumstance of having several sebenzas on hand. Must have been the result of some cancelled orders. I'd encourage you to call them to see if anything fits your need.

If I couldn't buy from CRK, my first stop would be Neil at TNK -- he's got some GREAT inventory, and he's personally a CRK collector and historian as well.

Me, I prefer the classic handle but like the less pointy regular blade. I had asked CRK about getting the classic but with the regular blade but they said no.

Redsox,

I'm not sure if you have made a choice yet but here is a side by side of mine.As I stated earlier,I prefer the cutout of the Classic but carry the Regular at work.IMHO,you will not have any trouble disengaging the Regular,it just comes down to what you get used to.I don't find the ridges to be uncomfortable at all,and the cutout of the Classic dosn't pose a grip problem either.

Hope this helps.

All other aspects you can get used too, it comes down to this:
Do you like a slimer, thinner blade get Classic.
Do you like a wider (more belly) blade get Regular.

One of you probably has the answer to this question...

I read that Mr. Reeve implements improvements in his designs as he discovers them, so I wondered why he made the change from the Classic to the Regular some years back. From an engineering perspective, is there anything about the handle or lock design of the Regular that is superior to the Classic? I assume the Classic was brought back because of customer preferences.

I have the Regular, but do plan to get a Classic for comparison.
:)

I did it! I just ordered the small REGULAR Sebenza from Plaza Cutlery. CRK had a 2 week waitlist, and Plaza Cutlery just seemed like they had good, friendly people to me so I went with them.

So, why the regular over the classic? Well, I still hesitated until the very last second, but I chose the regular mainly because of the blade shape. The reason I wanted a sebenza in the first place was because I wanted a single, durable knife that I could use for the rest of my life. So I figured the regular's blade (especially the tip) would be slightly sturdier.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll be looking forward to its arrival in 3 days!

CONGRATS on the small regular Sebbie! I look forward to hearing about it when it arrives.

Red Sox, if you need a quality sheath for your new Sebenza, Gary Graley is the man to see. His sheaths are excellent.
