OK. I'm weird. I admit it.

Hi folks,
I know most, but it seems like all, like CV blades to get a so called better edge and patina. I bought some CV knives just because of all the talk of it. Well I used my Canoe the other day to cut up an apple. Patina came. I DON'T LIKE PATINA. When I have looked at pictures I did not think much of it. But I thought that maybe if I did it to my own it would be different for me. NOPE. I don't like it at all. I like stainless steel. OK there I said it. I like that it stays shinny. Easy, no worries maintenece. But you say CV can get a better edge. I am sure that is true. But I have some pretty sharp SS blades. I am happy with how sharp they are, and can get. I just had to admit this so I can move on with my life. LOL. I am going to sell or trade off some of my CV blades and get SS. Call me crazy or weird. That is ok. I can deal with it.

My name is Bill, and I like stainless steel blades.

Bill

weird, SS works for you thats all that is important. Stainless can get plenty sharp enough. A couple of my cherished knives happen to be stainless.
I do think the CV sharpens up a little easier though.
But you really should send me all your CV blades ASAP:D

Patina forms that quickly? Maybe I should use my Barlow on some food or something. I generally prefer SS blades too (I don't like to worry about corrosion :))

Buck Fan..........you've taken the first step and admitted you have a problem. If you want, we can try and find you a good SS rehab facility and if you work hard at your recovery you will come out a new man, and patina will be your friend!:D

It's not weird at all, if you like SS that's all that matters!

Besides that will leave more carbon for us patina junkies.

I like a variety of flavors. Makes it easier to choose.

On rainy days I carry 440C or 12c27 or the like.

On fair days I carry 52100, 1095, D2 or O1 (or similar).

Oh, and let's not forget ATS-34 or CPM-154.

It's all good. ;)

I like my Case CV a lot but I also like my blades to have a shiny, mirror finish. The solution: Maas polish. Keep your CV knives and get some Maas or Flitz.

But I'm not totally anti-patina either. For some reason I like the patina on other knives, like some Schrades I've carried over the years.

The CV thing has become "out there" for many. I have owned a lot of knives and the closest custom is D2, not CV by any means. The top steels for knives are just not CV, something I am sure is lost to many. Now, let me just say this, CV is fine if that is what you want, but know what? It is not better than the premium knife steels. NOT!

I'll make an admission of my own. I like low end steels. I don't have a belt sander (nor am I likely to in the near future) to make reprofiling D2 or S30V easy-peasy. I like thin, convex edges and that's so much easier for me with lowly steels like 1095, 420HC, 12C27 or 440A. But I'm one of the guys who likes a good patina so it's CV, 1095, or Boker's C75 for me. Also, I find the carbon steels to be a little more forgiving if I hit a staple or other hard object. I'd rather have an edge roll than chip. Does that make me a steel slob?

Frank

P.S. Hey Dee, better for what? I've read long threads where S30v and ZDP-189 have chipped out on things that CV and 1095 have shrugged off. I myself had an S30V blade chip. So, I have to touch up my blades more frequently. I'm not convinced that makes the premium steels "better".

Quite right. As in most things, compromises and trade-offs abound.

Hey,
No body has mentioned A2 or W1 yet either.:D

What he said. ;).

I like patina. It gives me my daily RDA of iron when I cut up my food with a well seasoned blade :)

So far I have tried (in no particular order):
Schrade 1095
Carbon V
CV
Tru-Sharp
VG10
AUS10
AUS8
8Cr13MoV
9Cr13MoV
Queen D2
154CM
ATS-34
14-4CrMo
Buck 420HC
440A
440C
Gerber Surgical Stainless.

I like them.

As this topic has come up numerous times, I was sitting here thinking about it ..

Like most folks, I have knives of various steels. Old carbon steels, SS, a few ats-34's and a couple D2's from Dozier ...

The hardest use my knives ever see is working on deer and elk....
I don't use them for splitting firewood or any other tasks that they weren't designed for.

When I really think about it though, I don't ever remember my Grandad saying, " Boy I sure wish they would come out with some new Super Steels", these old knives just don't cut it ... He like a lot of men from that era, used their knives a lot, and not always for what they were designed for.

I'm not real big on change, but I know that with the technology we have today, it is possible to improve on some things. I'm just not convinced that these "improvements" are really much better ....

Bill,
You crack me up. I am sure you are just as cool on line as you are off line. I also am a shiny freak. I like to use Flitz to keep the mirror shine glinting back at me like a wink from a pretty girl!

If you like it, thats all that counts! Patina to me is a by-product that can look good, on some knives.. but without it, I'm still gonna be happy, especially if I am happy with the knife itself wokin'.

I love 1095, and O-1, or even 1084 is great, and I try for carbon on a lot of my knives I buy, for that old world 'feel' that I prefer on everything. But I still love the ones I have in ATS34 and 154CM just as much... I even find myself loving D2 lately, even though it's sorta/kinda neither carbon or SS... If it works, it works!

To edit knarfeng's list, case I'm too lazy to type it myself ;)

(in no particular order):
Schrade 1095
O-1
1084
Carbon V
CV
Tru-Sharp
AUS8
Queen D2
Custom D2
154CM
ATS-34
Buck 420HC
some 440C
and even some 440A
Frost laminated Carbon
They work, I like them.

Hi Bill, welcome to the meeting...hope you feel better now getting that off your chest....no, we won't think you're crazy.....we won't say it to your face anywayz.....remember, One Day At A Time......:D

Steel selection based on environmental factors/conditions. Interesting.

And I thought Buck_Fan was weird. :p :D
