Renting a DVD and Ripping it with software into MP4 format so that I can watch the movie on my Ipod. THe Milf says it is..I say it aint...Im not distributing it or anything...Just watching it...

PM sent to Ren The Devils DVD to iPod Pirate. :D

It's illegal under the DMCA.

Under standard copyright law, it would only be illegal if you kept it on your iPOD after your lease expired or if you allowed someone else to watch the DVD while you watched the iPOD copy.

If it makes you feel good and free, and it is copyrighted media content, then it probably is illegal, or will be soon. ;) Seriously though, the RIAA recently (a couple years ago) said that even if you purchased a CD that you have no right to rip it. They might have backed off that claim, but really, the law is very nebulous, and the RIAA and MPAA are constantly messing with it. Gollnick's advice is probably solid, but really, if you want advice that doesn't change in accuracy day-in day-out, then my advice probably is actually more accurate.
But gosh Ren, why aren't you using iTunes to get content for the iPod? It's like the hippest thing since butter was put on bread! ;)

I think some people assume that iTunes is only available for Mac users. It ain't just for Macs.

I do use I tunes...but try and buy the movie Aliens2 on Ipod...you can only rent it, and I have the DVD...so I downloaded the software to rip it into MP4 format and put it on my ipod.

Hmmm...

Maybe if you buy the DVD, rip it and convert it for your I-Pod, then shred the original disk but keep the bits in the original cover so you can prove you only have one copy...

On a more serious note, renting a movie and making a copy is piracy, whether you sell the copy or not. Buying a movie and making copies for others, whether for profit or not, is also piracy. Buying a movie and making a back-up copy should be legal as long as the back-up goes with the original if it changes hands, but the RIAA probably has other ideas about that. Too bad they didn't learn anything from the 70's.

just goto your local getto and get any brand new movie on dvd for like 5 bucks.(like i do jk lol) or you could trade them some of your would famous meth :D:D

Probably. If the software circumvented the copy protection on the DVD, then yes.*

As said before, you're violating DMCA, not copyright law. This is a perfect example of why DMCA is horrible - it prevents you from making reasonable use of something you paid for.*

Anyone want to start a raffle for Ren? We can use the money to send him iTunes gift cards when he's stuck in the clink.

*I'm not a lawyer. I just read the laws and try and interpret them logically. Which almost certainly means I'm wrong.

Yeah, it's illegal. That's what that FBI Warning thingy at the beginning is all about.

Really?! I thought it only applied to the French. ;)
