Black backgrounds allow the subject of the photo to stand out. The quality camera set up Rollie-J is using gives nice depth and realism to the photos.
As a side---I tried to snap a few images of the full-ish moon last evening, and could not get iDevices or any of my point-n-shoots to show ANY detail; that was easily seen with the naked eye.
I may need to look into upgrading my photo gear the same way I do most everything else. Last thing I need right now is another hobby.

N2K - the moon is a surprisingly difficult subject to shoot. I took this shot a few weeks ago when the Moon was closest to the Earth for the year. I didn't have the optimum equipment for the job either....best one I got:
