What with all the tactical craze that's been going on for some time. How do you guys think a site dedicated to selling traditional slip joint pocket knives would do ? If that site made every effort to include virtually every pocket knife being made today. Considering an expansion, and would like opinions.

It seems to me there are two markets.

One being newer, tactical, etc, seen very often here on bladeforums. Then there's the "traditional" slipjoint market, and I believe they're less well represented here.

If you're going to go after the traditional slip joint crowd, where are they and how do you intend on reaching them?

** When I went to knife shows it always seemed that the traditional slip joint folder crowd was on the higher end of the age range.

I agree with you that at least to a great extent it is a different market. There is much less emphasis on steel, than around here, and more on blade shapes, configurations, patterns, stag preferences, etc.

I'd venture to say though, that more than half of the BF members carry a little folder in their pocket as well.

Havent' decided on anything yet, just fishing so far. But, a clear 1/2 of what we already sell are slip joints, maybe that makes us different than many of the other dealers here at BF, I don't know.

I somewhat fluctuate between tactical folders, and traditional knives. I like them both, I like them all, I like them big, I like them small, I buy them at a store, I'll buy them at a mall, I'll buy them in the spring, I'll buy them in the fall.

oh crap I ran out of words that rhyme with "all"

Slips are one segment of the market that isn't promoted near as well as i'd like to see it but that would have to be one humungous site.

I like the cross-over knives. One hand opening with a traditional look, especially stag scales.

I agree with the cross-overs. A traditional looking folder with thumb studs and a pocket clip, stuff like that. These would appeal to both markets, and would introduce some people to the other half of the knife world. Wood scales on a tactical folder or G-10 on a classic style folder might confuse some people, but I'd buy some. At any rate, since you already have a knife site, I wouldn't open another one, maybe just add more products. Again, that could also get knife people from all sides of the spectrum browsing into areas they don't usually go. If you can stock or list virtually every pocket knife on the market today, that is great for you and your customers because they don't have to go anywhere else no matter what they want. But why not also sell virtually every tactical folder as well, for exactly the same reasons?

People have have different tastes. I make hunters and tacticals but often find myself purchasing older traditional folders. I cruise Ebay and bid on things as money justifies. I also belong to a local club that is mainly geared toward the older knives.
I would LOVE to see a site or page dedicated to slip joints and multiblades!!
