OK, now I have this bug up my rear end. I want to learn how to manipulate a Balisong.

I actually have NEVER even seen one before, and I am looking to ALL of you with experience to help me get started.

What should I buy? What books should I get? Will books work? What manufacturer?...

And, the list goes on....

I just want to thank all of you for giving me something else to be addicted to

(I bet you will wish you had a $1.00 for every time you wil see BM42 in this post.)

I own a Pacific Cutlery, and a Valor that are nice pieces. But, the BM42 has them beat down.

Ok guys, I'll be honest. I have been addicted to knives since I was knee high to a grasshopper... But, I never really, and I don't know why, looked into Balisongs.

But, a little money and and a little time on my hands has me reading the forums. Some of you probably have seen me post before.

In ALL seriousness, I have NEVER seen any martial arts movies where Bali's were being spun around. I really never did. I don't even know where to get started.

I don't personally know anyone who can do these maneuvers, gosh....the sheeple I have to live around make me sick. But, that's my problem.

I am "SO" fortunate that I can read this forum from work. Their proxy blocks almost everything. I CAN'T get to balisongxtreme.com from work though... that is blocked. Whatever software they are using must have picked it up as a "weapon" type site, and is thus blocked.

But, I can get to the forums. You guys have taught me a lot, and I still have much more to learn. A man who claims to know everything is a fool.

So, now I am at home, and visited the balisongxtreme.com site, and went to the beginners section. I can visualize in my mind what is happening, but, I have no real vision of it. I have never handled one of these knives. If you say BM42 is the way to to, then I will, but, let me be honest. Do we tend to cut ourselves and bleed alot when practicing?

Where can I see this kinda stuff actually in action. I can only imagine. I have no basis in fact.

Where/who carries the BM42, best price, and I need a GOOD instruction system.

Let me know what you think.

Ciao!

I know what you mean, my company's proxy does the very same thing, cept I *can* access balisongXtreme.com. But sites like bladeauctions.com and knifeforums.com are blocked

Try 1sks.com for the bm42. People here have said that cutleryshoppe.com has the best going price/deal right now. But I don't think any of them have received there knives yet, after placing their orders months ago.

I placed an order on the 8th of December... still no 42. I've heard somebody say that they received one from cutleryshoppe.com. Anybody else gotten theirs?

Just so you know, cutleryshoppe told me they would have them at the end of january. as i already have two 42's, i ended up cancelling my order. maybe i'll try again later.

I won a BM42 at Gunbroker.com and I believe there is a few more listed.

Lundo,

If you're really that anxious, go to the "for sale by individual" forum NOW - there are several posted.

well Clay does have videos that you can download.

and two movies I can think of off of the top of my head that had a balisong manipulation were The Mummy (near the end), and Payback

I think I know how you feel. I don't really remember how my addiction started, but I soon after I found BX, I grabbed some old cheap multitool that had been lying around since I stole it in fifth grade, and got it really loose, and started practicing with it. I ended up ripping off the plastic covering the handles and drilled the pins out so all the tools came out. I recently let a friend borrow it for a while. He just approached me one day, and said something like, "You know the thing you do with the pliers?(twirling fingers around) Can you teach me?"

The next day, I gave him a stack of papers with balisong anatomy/terminology, a list of all the techniques on BX, and one of those little butterfly keychains, wrapped with a picture of Jeff Imada for his Christmas present

A BM42 is very nice, but a Jaguar or Bear would be fine too. There are several retailers on the forum and also on the links section of my page. Also, if you look at the blue bar at the top of the screen, on the right you'll see a little link labeled "STORE". Click on that to go to One Stop Knife Shop and look at their Dragon Forged line which are just Jags but they supposedly use better pins.

Clay's site is great and you can really learn a lot there. But, for a beginner with nobody around to help, a VHS video can be nice since it'll be a bigger picture and better motion. Jeff Imada's video is nice as are Scott Brennan and David Miller's tapes.

Balisongs -- because it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

Hi Lundo,

welcome to the Balisong world. I started my fascination back in the 80's.. but that is another story.

Let me share:
I watched movie "Code Name Wildgeese" and found that the knife used was a double handle and later found from "Streets of Fire" the first double flip move.
then ... Imada's book told me the knife name was and IS BALISONG ...
Tell you what, get from Amazon the Imada's Balisong Manual. It works, simple basics. Then you are ready for anything more advanced.

Learn from www.balisongxtreme.com is good, Clay is really a self taught master. It might be only my preference, but I like his manipulating better than Imada, after comparing the same technique executed.

Good luck.

As of cut, look here : http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum47/HTML/001102.html

Best wishes

Tape up the edge to start with and don't take the tape off until you're confident you don't need it any more.

Might be a good idea to keep one balisong with the edge taped for trying out new ideas ... I can't say I do that myself, but I would if I had any brains ... well, don't blame me if I don't ... we all have to work with the resources available....

This post is not merely the author's opinions; it is the trrrrrruth. This post is intended to cause dissension and unrest and upset people, and ultimately drive them mad. Please do not misinterpret my intentions in posting this.

I went ahead and ordered a BM42 from cutleryshoppe.com yesterday. They didn't indicate that there would be any problem with the order.

As far as videos, I am gonna check out balisongxtreme, and dig up whatever else I can find; pick up a good book, eto...

I told my wife about this, and she almost flipped. "Why do you want to learn how to do THAT!!!" She says. Well, I can't really explain it in anyother way than to say, it's cool, and I like the feel of a knife in my hands.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed input thus far.

Ciao!!!

I downloaded Clay's freestyle mpegs and burned them onto a cd, cuz my dvd will play them

If you think the man is awesome on your computer you should see him on the BIG screen. I showed my wife and all she could say was WOW.

Well I guess you have the bali part down. I've used Clay's site almost exclusively and have learned quite alot. I disagree about taping the blade though, I believe that cutting yourself (or at least the thought of it)will increase your discipline. I started out with a China I paid to much for and then moves to a razor sharp Bear Damascus. I learned twice as fast on the bear. I recently ordered a BM 42A from 1sks and can't wait till I get the thing.

Anxiously awaiting my BM 42A

Hi guys,

I ordered 2 books on Balisongs from Amazon. I hope the knife itself comes soon.

Now, here is what I want to know...

Does anyone know a "backdoor" into balisongextreme.com?

By this, I mean, a different url. For example, my employer has eBay blocked, and if I try to goto www.ebay.com, I get blocked, logged, and, if you accumulate too many of these, it could be trouble.

So, just type in listings.ebay.com

That's it. I can get to eBay that way. This is what I mean by a backdoor.

Anyone know one?

Ciao!
