My problem, I was being too fancy with it.
I just came back from a very active ( and well earned ) vacation...non technical mountain climbing, hiking in the hills and some fast boating. O.K., O.K., there was picnicing too. My BA3 rode comfortably at my side, ready at a moment's notice and away at a moment's notice.
All I did, and I forget who suggested it, was tighten the 550 cord by re-knotting it at the back with a slip 1/2 hitch, then bringing the snap part over the finger guard/talon hole. It now works just like any other retaining system you are used to. The knife is very secure using this method...it doesn't budge even when tugged.
One benefit to the 550 cord compared to a strap or webbing is that when you replace the knife, there is enough "give" to the 550 cord that the blade sort of pushes it out of the way without cutting into it. After multiple resheathings, the cord is unscathed. I used the slip 1/2 hitch because it is easy to restore the length of the cord if I want to use the wrap method.
IMHO, for hiking, around camp or even on the water, you just don't need to "single" wrap it or "double wrap" it unless you are upside down or something.
I feel like such a doofus not seeing the light before. BRAVO JERRY, I couldn't be happier with this rig...unless it came with a pouch.
