...but I need to pick your brains on what to buy...

I am looking for a fixed blade.

4-5in blade, preferrable 5in. No more than 5in, those are illegal in Texas.

Thin grips and profile like a RC-3. Preferrable no more in width, and the thickness isn't that crucial. It has to carry flat and easy.

Here's the biggie - a DROP DOWN LEATHER sheath...aka Ka-Bar USMC style...I want the pommel at or below my belt so I can wear it in front of my pocket.

I would prefer carbon steel - 1095, D2, etc.

$150 tops, but under $100 would be stellar.

Current leader is a RC-4 with a custom sheath...RC-5 is too thick/heavy.

Show em if ya got em!

I have an RC-4 and it's great. But if I were in your shoes I'd carefully consider a Swamp Rat Howling Rat LM. I have a couple and it's my favorite fixed blade in that size.

You need to pre-order soon -- go to the Swamp Rat subforum for details.

Is this sheath too high?

Not when you can get it with the knife for $120...good find I appreciate it. This one is leading but I certainly would love more opinions.

The Swamp Rats look as thick as their bussekin. Lil too wide in the handle.

The blade is 3/16 and the handle is only slightly wider my RC-4, maybe by 1/16".

I just moved here, forgive my ignorance! Hrm...the Shorty Ka-bar might be in the running again. I appreciate the info man, gives me alot more options!

Why don't ya go with a full custom from JK Handmade knives in the makers section, can't go wrong with his knives. I've always babied my knives and when i got his i did the same until someone told me to beat on it. So i took it into the woods one day with a bud and we beat the snot out of it, and it was still able to shave somewhat and could cut paper. Just sayin :-)

If I am not mistaken the legal length is 5 1/2in at least here in my area. But the RAT (now ESEE) RC4 is an awesome knife, I love mine.

J, I;d avoid the shot kabar unless you know it fits your hand well. It does not fit my hand well at all. The grip is too narrow. I have to really squeeze it to get a good hold on it.

I'd stick with an RC4

You may want to check this. You can exceed the 5 1/2" limit if "actor was own premises; was traveling; engaged in lawful hunting, fishing, or other sporting activity; security guard"

Unless you want to carry that bad boy around town, you can have one with you at home or in the woods.

Personally, I carry an RC/ESEE 6 when I'm in the backcountry. Go with the 4 if you like it - they are great knives and there is a pretty good leather sheath combo at knivesshipfree.com

Get the biggest one you can find.
It's not like you'll be wandering down the Stemmons freeway waving it around. Or you might. :D

Ok so I got the RC-4. This is going to be my "two wheeler" knife... so it's gonna be hard to flail about on the Stemmons and not get ran over...no worries Mikey!

;)
