Ok, so now I understand what a convex edge is...

How many people use one?

GREAT GREAT GREAT videos at KSF... thanks for linking me to that!

What makes the Convex edge better or worse?

Is it more forgiving to maintain? do they hold an edge longer?

Clearly a RAT comes with beveled edges, do you have to go through rough work to convex it? or will it simply turn with sometime on the strop?

Maintaining the edge is easy cuz there isn't a real angle to it, the soft material (leather mousepad) will follow the curvature of the edge.

I think it's also more durable cause there's a lot of metal behind the edge witch gives you a strong but razorsharp edge.

Just what i think about it :D

plus when done to a mirror finish it looks COOOWL :D

No problem for the link. It's great info. razorback is one spot from what I know.

my bark river bravo 1 is convexed and I find it great. Easy to sharpen and it cuts very well. I find the sharpening method much easier than stones and such so it works for me. I will be slowly convexing my rats when i get em. Just sharpen em with sand paper. Over time they will become fully convexed.

From my own experience, I have found that a convex edge will hold its edge longer than a conventional. Also, a convex edge seems to do a better job of chopping, and as others have mentioned it is a bit easier to maintain.

Not a fan. I like a toothy edge and I just don't get it with a convex.

I've had a bunch of Barkies cone through the Shotgun shack and they all end up traded off.

EDIT: If you want to see what a proper, well done convex edge can do check out Richard j's website: http://sites.google.com/site/richardjsknives/Home/more-knife-pics-and-vids

If I knew how to properly care for a convex edge, I'd send all my blades to him for a new edge.

I like convex edges. Along with my RATs I have about a dozen Barkies. I even had Bark River put a full convex grind on my RC-4. I've kept beveled edges on all my other RATs. Sharp is sharp and unfortunately I don't get a chance to use all my knives enough to worry about the difference. Convex is easy to maintain once you get the hang of it. I'm still working on perfecting that skill but since most of the RAT line so far are ground at an angle that fits my Sharpmaker I haven't seen the need to convex them. I'd say go with whichever is easier to maintain. Either way your RAT will cut like the dickens!

what method can be used in the field to maintain a convex edge? is there a tool of some sort that will consistently put on the proper convex edge?

A Strop

to maintain a convex edge in the field you can use a leather strop with some white rouge if the edge isnt too bad and doesnt need a burr worked up before stropping. most use a mousepad with abrasive paper attached but i think thats too soft. get a kitchen table placemat and cut it into 2" wide x 12" or so strips. then attach some 400 grit wet or dry abrasive on one side and some 320 in the other with some spray adhesive or rubber cement. you can roll this up and carry it with you.

knivesshipfree has a few of great in-field strops and a complete kit for all your needs. i use them they work great for all my barkies. think i'll convex my next izula.
i like both a convex edge and a toothy edge, i guess i depends on the knife and what that blade will be used for.

All of my knives end up convexed eventually. It's the easiest type of edge to sharpen and maintain for me. All you need is high-grit sandpaper.
