Ok I know this is going to sound strange to some of you but before I blow your mind I wanna say I do this becuase I don't have the money to buy doubles of every knife I buy so needless to say there are some nicer knives I have that I don't like to carry for fear of scratching them or nicking them or even loosing one (which I have done with my sprint run Jester recently) So it got me thinking I have carried some cheap fixed blade knives before and this is where I blow your mind some of which include a few small "kitchen knives" these were purchased and used only as an edc knife would be meaning they have done many different tasks but they were not kitchen knives to begin with that got converted to carry they were always carry use in my mind. So to sum this up I guess I am wondering if anyone else here has ever done this and carried a small < 3" paring knife or even as large as the one I have now a 4.5" santoku style knife?

Why buy a knife if you aren't going to use it? The Condor Sapien looks like a paring knife but is a true hard work knife.

They all get used but the ones that I would consider to be nicer quality ones that are either discontinued or getting harder to find usually only cut paper or open packages the ones I am referring to carrying are hard use ones.

Again, I'd just say get an EDC blade you don't mind beating up. Gotta be better than a paring knife. Rat 1 or Tenacious/Resilience come to mind, on the cheap. Or an Endura.

personally I usually carry 3 knives a fixed blade for hard duty (snody black diamond boss), one for edc tacks (kershaw skyline, para 2,) and one to make me feel fancy or as a convo piece (ZT0777, 0600, or VECP) but find what works for you I use them all even the convo pieces but in varying degrees of use.

I buy my knives with the intent of using them. I have some knives that are the beater knives that get used a bit harder than some of the others. I tend to choose my EDC according to the anticipated tasks at hand. If I can't decide, I ask my son and let him pick one for me.

There are a few knives that I have duplicates of:
Kershaw Chill
Spyderco Bug
SAK Classic

The Classic and Bugs live on key rings. The Chills are easy to mod and customize, I made custom wood scales for them.

If you are looking for a pocket knife that makes a great paring knife, check out the Al Mar Ultralight series. The FFG blades have great geometry for slicing. Don't let the price scare you, they are top notch knives with good fit and finish. They are also very light as the name implies and almost disappear in your pocket.

All of my knives are users. You only live once, so you might as well use the nicer things in life so that you can actually enjoy them. A nice scratch free knife in a safe is a knife that isn't being enjoyed to it's full potential.

Nothing wrong with having some duplicates as backups. You may lose a favorite knife that may not be made in the future , it's price may go up , and you may want to have that knife in different locations as well. Having more than one you like frees you of any inhibitions you have about using it hard and/or losing it. Jmo.

Why buy a knife if you aren't going to use it?

/ thread.

As soon as you start to embrace all of the character marks that your knife gets through carry and use, the hobby becomes much more rewarding IMO.

If I find a knife too nice for me to use it without hesitation, I sell or trade it. Keeping a knife in its box is like keeping a bird in a cage. Make those knives happy and cut stuff with them!

Overall, Id say not really, the knives in my EDC rotation are by nature ' users ' some pricier than others, but no ' Pocket Jewelry ' Anything thats discontinued, antique or hard to find, I just appreciate using all the more...
I can understand the rationale of carrying an inexpensive user , much like when folks used to carry two handkerchiefs - One for Showin' and one for Blowin'
So maybe ' One for Struttin' and one for Cuttin' might work '
Also, I wouldn't like to hear ' so if you're so into having such nice knives why do you carry such a cheap piece of crap all the time?

All of my knives have marks on them from use. Whether from camping, hunting, sharpening, or wear from carrying them. I think it adds to their character, and the marks remind me of the times I have used them. If I bought a knife with the intention of selling it in the future then I would not use it and would worry about scratches on it.

If you're worried about losing a knife, make a push pin lanyard. If I carry a more expensive knife, I find that I pay more attention to the abuse issue and also to the loss issue.View attachment 387751

For me there is always a "honeymoon" period with every new knife I get. Eventually though I use the knife and I find that when I do it's a great feeling. I have a bunch of cheaper EDC's, Cyro, Injection, Rat 2, Leek, etc. and I use certain ones depending on what's going on. I had a habit of saving my ZT's but I remember when I finally broke one out and really started using it I felt much better about it. Now I carry it frequently. (although my 300 blackwash is still collecting dust) So go put some scratches and nicks on those knives..;)

I have knives that were users from day 1 and I have knives that were not. Generally Kerwhaws, Beckers are users and Case, Queen are drawer candidates . Mirror polished blade surfaces or have printing, laser etched blades to me mean keep them pristine. Satin finished/sandblasted, machined get used as tools. I have one knife roll that has only advertising knives and IMO they focused on the name a lot more than as a tool. Case knives over 100 years old have earned comfortable berths here.

Spydercos and their damn sprint runs and limited edition knives in general that I really like.

Case in point; Caly 3.5 SuperBlue, PM2 20CP, Stretch CF, 710 M390...

These are examples of knives that I have/wish to have multiples because I like them so much and the fact that they wont be produced again makes me want to keep backups. Got my bases covered, I have piece of mind that I'll have my knife and to those who feel that it is a waste of money well... The user and the backup can be sold at no loss 99.9999999% of the time.

Your question..."wondering if anyone else here has ever done this and carried a small < 3" paring knife or even as large as the one I have now a 4.5"

Lots of folks here carry an Opinel as an EDC. I don't, but it could work okay most of the time. I believe that the folks who carry an expensive folder don't really NEED an expensive folder...

I usually buy blems or second hand knives just to avoid being paranoid about scratches or dings, plus I know buying a $200 used knife usually helps out another knife guy get his next sweet blade, so its a win-win.
