Just saw the movie tonignt "Cast Away" and was wondering what ONE knife I would like to have if I would have been stranded on an island for 4 years. Maybe my D-2 Kabar, what do you think?

Randall Model 14 with a 7.5 inch stainless steel, double edge blade.

4 years on a deserted island without the wife and kids? Well if the peace and solitude didn't kill me, the lack of a good knife would.

Allen Blade Talonite MEUK.

No rust, no maintenance, no problems.....

Of course I would want multiple knives and a 4 set DMT sharpening system, plenty of food, a satillite dish and Heather Locklear for company....

Tom: Right On! Tom Hanks couldn't find his way through a knife show without the Pope giving him a ride through it on the "Pope Mobile" and constantly "blessing" him. Even then he would be "terrified". What's the deal that we knife folks worship Hollywood so much? They are THE ONES who would take this Website off the Net in a HEARTBEAT, if they could.

That knife on the end of his keychain that he could have taken. Anything bigger than that and they would have confiscated before he got on the FedEx plane. Maybe not even that after that incident they had a few years ago.

My leatherman and Spyderco Native make it through airport security every time, so in an airplane castaway situation I would have those on me, and they would serve well enough.

I would really like to have a Buck Nighthawk.
They have superior corrosion resistance (important on a saltwater island: carbon steels lose their edge to corrosion as soon as one uses them), hold an edge and have great ergonomics for all sorts of heavier duty chores.
I probably couldn't get a Nighthawk through airport security, though.

I would really like to have some sort of steel, diamond or ceramic straightening/sharpening rod to keep whichever knife I had sharp.

Heres my chance to bragg on an old friend! I would have to have my Gerber Parabellum with me on that island. I have had it since 1989 and carried it dailey in my back pocket. I sanded some of the width down on the handle and polished the blade so it falls open quickly when the bolt action lock is pulled back. I have tried to destroy this knife and it keeps bouncing back every time.I have destroyed a couple of other knives trying to find something not quite so big to replace it with. One was a buck crosslock that fell to pieces when it was abused a little bit.( yeah, I know you ain't supposed to throw a folder, tell that to my parabellum!) I have even used it for throwing practice and other than the stick on gerber emblems falling off, and dulling the blade a little, it is still hanging in there. I have even cut through the side of a building with it and used it to cut insulation off of piping and to dig in the dirt with, And last but not least, It is long enough to reach the bottom of a mayonaise jar so I didn't have to throw any away! Like I have heard before, "You can do a small job with a big knife, But you can't do a big job with a small knife" !

I know I strayed away from the "Isalnd", but here in the real world my gerber takes care of the tuff jobs! Besides, They wouldn't let me near an airplane with it.

Man! I get this ALL the time, I'll tell you once more....I'm NOT Tom Hanks!

But if I were and ended up on an island all alone, I'd want for a solid folder and I'd go for the Large Sebenza and probably one of the large fixed blades by Chris Reeve.

Reasons?
There are no real weak points on his knives, no scales to break or fall off, very spartan and yet very good looking to me at least...

I'd want to have my Cold Steel Recon Scout (this is one STOUT, "right-sized" knife), AND my Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 to keep my Scout razor-sharp.

Well I saw the movie last night and really enjoyed it. I would wish I would had a Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri with me to work with and I would rather had a Inflatable woman to talk to than a Wilson Socker ball

.....and Roger would name his inflatable woman Heather.....hahahah (sorry privage joke)!

I sat through the entire movie wondering what was in the mystery package... Would have been funny if it was a nice Busse BM (although it could have been an inflatable woman?!

Talonite? Hmmm what if you hit a rock by accident? I will stick with my D2 Ka Bar an great choice for little money. Failing that a Drop point Busse. Talonite indeed.

There's no way I'm going to get on a plane that's going to dump me in the middle of a stormy pacific with only a small SAK! The guy had a script after all! At least I'd have had my full jump kit (a packed Blackhawk 3 Day Assault Pack) strapped to my back and around my waist and chest at all times.

For knives, it'd either be my Busse SH II, a Livesay HKR, or a combination of Livesay Air Assault and a Ross Aki parang! The SAK or multi tool is a given. The pack would have taken care of my fire, shelter, food, water, and even communications if anyone thought to listen to U.S. amateur transmissions. If they didn't find me soon, the blades would have carried me through to the sequel!

Ah, the old "desert island" thread. I predict we will see it again come Jan. when the next "Survivor" series kicks off.

Talonite has turned out to be tougher than I expected, and with such an extended time frame might work better than even a good stainless. Without proper care any carbon tool steel won't last long enough, even D2.

So I say, Talonite, indeed! I'll take my Griffith Tracker with the 4-1/2" blade made of the stuff. An excellent camp knife that should do the trick for diving, food prep, etc. Solid drop point design with a long edge and strong tip.
