Give me your tired Okapi's, Your poor Okapi's Your huddled masses of Okapi's yearning to be Free! HE HE... just thoght I would get your attention! I have been slicing & dicing, cutting & more cutting with this carbon bladed Marvel. I have come to the conclusion that the Okapi 907E Lock knife is darn good for just about any chore you need to do! IMHO Despite its size it is very pocket freindly & light weight! IMHO:thumbup:

It's no wonder.

The Okapi, like the sodbuster, the Opinel, the Mercator, and the Douk-Douk, is an honest working knife for those who need a real cutting tool, but don't have alot of money. A good plain carbon steel to keep the cost down, and you end up with a knife that does what a knife is supposed to.

Bob W... To be honest I had Ragnar sharpen it as I didn't want to mess with an unsharpened blade. It only cost me 3 bucks. The African's I read somewhere like the chisel edge on their knives. Having a coulple different knives with the chisel edge I can see why. The chisel edge is quick to resharpen & cuts well. I had a traditional knife edge put on the Okapi by Ragnar. The standard V edge.

That's why I asked; I paid the $3 too. :D

I just recieved the medium non locking version from Ragnar. Either he sharpened it for free or Okapi is getting better about grinding their knives. It came sharp enough that any casual user would have no problem just dropping it in their pockets and going about their business. I had a shaving sharpe edge in about five minutes of sharpening on my sharpmaker. I have to say I'm very suprised at how sturdy this knife is for only $8. I was expecting a much lower quality knife.

Pocketwocket.. glad to hear your experiance! I plan on getting a couple non-locking versions as well. A lot of times you just don't need a lock & a slippie is quick to deploy opening & closing. The steel will take a keen edge as you observed. The pressed wood handles are very stout. Just enjoy that pure cutting pleasure for sure!

OK, after reading all the good things about these knives, I think I've decided to get one myself...the only question I have is where is the best place to get a nice Okapi?

http://ragweedforge.com under Traditional knives. Ragnar will put any edge you want for 3 bucks.. ask Ragnar for one with a solid lockup & no blade play. He will check it out for you. Ragnar is a great guy to deal with & only 5 bucks per order is the way to go if you order several !

Ragweed forge seems to be the best deal going. Great prices and excellent service. These knives really can take an amazing edge, not five minutes ago I was distracted by a room mate while closing mine. I didn't even realize it had bitten me till I saw the look on her face. It laid open three fingers with only the lightest pressure.

When I saw the word Okapi I thought Mmm I have one of those somewhere , its a small 3" blade none locking one, bought back in Africa in the 1960`s if I remember correctly.
Found it in my workshop toolbox , havn`t used it for years but it still looks ok. :-)

Thats the one made in Germany.. nice find! I believe from 1987 on they moved production to South Africa. Some guy's here say this has improved the quality in the Okapi. I don't know if they are talking about the handle fit & finish or the blade steel or both?

It could be the sharpening of the blades .

Ive been importing and ebaying them for a while , I get the factory to sharpen them for me ( Ragnar , if youre reading this , they will do it for you too if you ask , free , but you will still have to sharpen about 50% of them yourself )

Ive been noticing that the blades lately on the 907e knives have been coming with a finer finish , and a better taper , well a one more to my liking anyway ,its actualy pointy at the pointy end

I think they are pretty much still being made the way they were in 1910 or something , each knife varies from the next a bit in blade thickness and edge profile , color of the handle and the general finish

Ive been lucky enough to be dealing direct with the factory and they are great folk to deal with .

Its a bit of a shame that more people dont import and distribute a better variety of the knives Okapi make , in my humble opinion .

Wow.. thats so cool! Going to look you up on Ebay. Out of 7 Okapi's I only have two not quite up to snuff. One has slight vertical bladeplay & the other has slight side play. They are still usable though. I am not going to complain because the price is reasonable. I have had Major USA factory blades do the same thing.

email me , howyergoin at bigpond.com .

Each of the Okapi knives is slightly different from the next , in blade thickness and shape way more noticeabley so in the 907e knives tho .

I just received a dozen bush knives with a 20 inch blade , they are all slightly different from each other as well , they are nearly all spoken for tho ... only a few to sell / hand out .

I like Okapi because so much of it is hand done , and each knife is individual ..
that being said , I have a few that have too much blade play or there are bends in the blade , Ikeep them in a pile on the work bench , one day Ill do something with them
