Didn't like Made In China, but I see the USA-made models on their site. Still, would prefer FFG blades. What struck me though was the easy-peezy pulls. Are those on the 'light' side of things, or about par?

In a related question, what sort of natural handle material will give me the least trouble in the dry desert climate here? Bone/Stag?

I would say my Buck's have a little softer pull than most of my other traditional knives. The dymond wood that comes on the Buck knives is pretty bullet proof too so you shouldn't have any issues with it in any climate.

I have a Buck 301 and a 303. Both have delightfully easy pulls (easy, not weak) on all blades, but snap into the open position with authority. Not sure how they rig that, but it's ideal for me.

I have four domestic Bucks and around five imports, I'd definitely agree with everyone so far that they have lighter pulls than my other traditionals. I don't find it to hinder their functionality in anyway, and the steel they use on the domestics is the bee's knees!
