Gas is going up, and everything we use, from toothpaste to salt and pepper is transported by truck. Who is doing what to deal with the rising cost of operating a motor vehicle, and rising cost of living in general?

I'm eating out less.

But since we have one car, a diesel which gets over 40 MPG, it hasn't hurt much, yet.

Just be happy that you're not an old guy like me who remembers gas selling at $0.49 a gallon, and a nice full-course steak dinner for $3.50!

I'm only buying cheap Chinese-made knives!

OK, I'm not. Three words though...

proper....tire....inflation.

But thats the problem of why I'm so mad- I remember when gas was .27 cents a gallon, a bottle of Coke was .10 cents out of the machine, and a brand new Chevy C-10 pick up with the 327 engine was 2,000 dollars.

C'mon, Dann, we BOTH remember gas wars in trhe '60s where gas could go for less than 25 cents a gallon.....;)

I replaced the wife's old Valiant with a newer Civic and my old VW with a newer Mazda. That saves some gas. So does walking up to the liquor store. Even still, the price at the pump has forced me to cut back on spending. I haven't got a knife or CD in a while. I've been getting previously viewed movies from the mom-n-pop video store instead of new ones from the Mart. I've had to put off getting a CD player for the Honda. I've put off getting a new PC. I'm making do with my old school bag. The price at the pump has just about taken me out of the consumer pool. Gas prices have almost convinced the wife that a pair of small motorcycles would be a good investment.

I remember when Petrol was 6s.6d per Imperial gallon and cod n' chips was 3s.3d!

And a brand new Mini was less than £500.0s.0d.

I remember when I had no idea what the pound was. Now I know its a Royale with cheese? ;)

Yeah, prices were hovering around 2.75 a couple weeks ago, lowest I can find in the area is 2.95. Station was 2.91 on Sunday.

Or...try less than $0.20 a gallon for gas and a full-course steak dinner for $1.75! Hmmm....guess I'm REALLY dating myself!

And I think I recall gas for under $0.15 -- but the memory is pretty hazy!

The lovely gas wars of the '60s are looooonngggg gone.

AWUK,
I don't understand your pound vs dollar.....but if cod and chips is the same as what we Continentals call "fish and chips" with a good bit of malt vinigar....
I could be willing to pay the price increase....(smile), but Oh Boy, good fish and chips with good malt vinigar is doggone special!!!!

As to petrol/gasoline prices...at least in the USA, I personally think "Big Oil" may in fact own "Big Government".....I can't prove it but it sure as heck looks like it!!!!!!!!!!

O.P., You must be an older fellow. I am an antique, and I remember gas at
$0.23 per gallon with a "gas war" taking it down to $0.21 per gallon.....

Memories are so much an asset to the no-longer-youngsters......

I recall when a deck of smokes cost a dollar !!!

Now look at 'em , I can afford to drive and smoke.

So I guess I walk. :D

well, the exchange rate in those days was $2.40 to the pound. So 3s.3d. for cod and chips was... 39c. Salt, malt vinegar and newsprint included.
Petrol 78c per gallon imp.

A good cod'n'chips today is about £3.50/$7.00. Though I tend to go for haddock myself.

In my time [ stone age ] gas was a plain old .21 cents a gallon. A half # T-bone ,small salad & fries was .99 ,the Saturday night door-buster in most Florida shopping centers .

Those were the days my friends, we'd thought they'd never end, they'd last forever & a day.....

Sounds like a nostalgic song,eh ?

Uncle Alan [ fossil bait ? ] :D

I remember paying 49 cents a gallon when I started driving.

At the time, I drove a full size Ford pickup that required me to fill both tanks every three to four days. I bitched about the cost back then. (I commuted to work and school)

Today, I'd probably vapor lock if I had to do the same!

Actually gas has gone down from about $3.58 a gallon about a week ago to $3.33 today. Hope the trend continues.

I'm not using my work truck for recreational use. Riding motorcycle for errands. Walking more. Eating out locally and shopping locally more. More online ordering, instead of trips to town. Since the nearest good theatre is 90 miles, we rarely go.

But it's not really having a noticable effect on the traffic around here.
Made a mental note on the drive over The Pass this week: Over half of the cars on the interstate are non-local, perhaps 80% or more. At least half are SUVs and full-size-trucks. A few may be business travelers, but the majority are obviously recreational drivers. The WalMart parking lot is filled each evening with dozens of giant RVs and trailers. And there are lots and lots of full-sized vehicles with only one or two passengers.
Not much difference in town either. The main street is still heavy traffic, and getting worse every year. It's a small town and there are few places too far to walk or bicycle, but there are very few pedestrians or cyclists (there's only one bike rack in the entire town of 6,000 people). Traffic continues at night for hours after the last business has closed, even on school nights. And I swear that most of the traffic is the same couple of hundred cars driving back and forth over and over again...

Maybe if gas gets up to $8 I'll finally get some peace and quiet...

About three miles from my house is a four-way intersection. The left-hand turn is toward the interstate, double lanes, and from the light immediately goes up a long, steep hill.
I call this "OPEC hill", because of the cars sitting at the light just waiting for the left turn light, then trying to be the first one to the top. As long as people will roar off, burning a lot of extra gas, just for the dubious distinction of beating the other guy to the top, they are in effect donating money to the OPEC countries. Guys in large pickups seem to be the worst about this. I have to admit that until recently I was often a participant.

When gas prices are truly too high, this stupid behavior will largely stop. And even at current gas prices, stupid is the only thing I can call it.

The number one way to save on gas is to keep the vehicle parked, avoiding unnecessary trips. The second is to slow down! Air resistance increases proportionally to the square of the speed of the vehicle. The third is to drive in such a way that you can stay off the brakes and accelerator as much as possible. Since I recently grew a brain, I have easily increased my gas mileage by 15% or better.
