Okay, seriously? This is how I spend my free time and still keep a girlfriend?

Tonight was a learning experience. I was showing my four main user khuks to a friend of mine. Since I'd whittled the handle on my M43, it was looking a little less than stellar, so we decided we'd coat it with a little stain and boiled linseed oil.
Hmmm... what to do in the meantime?
Hmmm... so you say that dryer doesn't work?
Hmmm... so these knives have a lifetime warranty?

Now, in all fairness, maybe it was asking a little much. But, you know, a fellow only lives once. It started with my Sirupati by Sher. Then my WWII by Tara Bhadur. Then my pen knife by Lachu. Now, the pen knife rolled easily, but the rolling of the tip was easily fixed. The WWII looked like it *maybe* showed some roll, but that may have been from hitting concrete blocks on the end of a cut from a week before when I lazily hammered it straight. I was also swinging it so that part of the blade near the end that's kind of like a yokote would stick, and it punched through the dryer with little effort.
And then there was the Sirupati. The armour piercing khukri. It went through parts, often through double layers. The drum didn't slow it down. We definitely spent the most time stabbing the sirupati through the dryer. And the tip never rolled. It sorta dulled, as though we were using it on soft, abrasive media. But no roll. None. My friend commented to me, "I can't believe I'm doing this to your knives, and I'd never do this to one of mine. But dude, I think I want one of these now." He couldn't believe how soft it felt on a file compared to how it refused to roll or deform punching through all that metal.
So I learned that all HI knives are tanks. And that Sher seems to use depleted uranium armour on his tanks.
Of course this pretty much means I have to get me another M43, hanshee, pen knife, and bolo all by Sher.

So far these blades made by Sher Kami are in my collection:

* 17inch Foxy Folly;
* 24.25inch Giant Chitlangi Bowie;
* 10inch Kumar Karda;

+ 15inch BAS given to friend as 70 birthday present (he's a very good friend!)

Plus need to add Sher Bowie onto my 'to get list' :D

MagenDavid- I can totally relate to what you are saying... More importantly, when you start to amass such a large collection of large knives as many of us do, how do you tell/show your collection to a potential girlfriend without scarring her away??? What does your girlfriend say about all of this???

I only have one HI but I love it. I think the key is to get a girlfriend then slowly collect them. Show her how sharp they are. Then they are afraid to leave!! MUAHAHAHA!

By the way, I'm joking! Knife collecting is a good way to see if you've got an easy going-open minded woman! (or man if you are a woman collector)

My girlfriend, before she was my fiance, before she was my wife, was always very supportive of my habit.

We were actually engaged before I found HI. That said, I KNEW that we were meant to be together the day that Uncle Bill accidentally sent a katana AND a 25" Kobra that I could not make my mind up on. He said to just send back which ever one I didn't want to keep.
I brought the dilemma up to my fiance. Being fiscally prudent, I asked her which one I should keep. She said, "Keep them both. You obviously want both, and they really round out your collection." :D

The next day, the balance for the Kobra was whisking off to Reno. I was two long blades richer and that much more assured that I was marrying the right woman:thumbup:

I am fortunate, my Lil-Bit loves knives, khuks, and guns, and camping, and and and.....

Now if I could only get my M1 Garand out of her hands for some trigger time!

I am quite thankful for a girlfriend who, upon hearing I bought a new khuk, says, "Cool. You'll have to show it to me."
If the knives don't scare a girl away, I make a point to blindfold myself and take apart and put back together the slide assembly on my Glock 19. If that doesn't faze her, she's a keeper.
And if she actually wants to try and stab the khuk through a dryer, too, I'm thinking I should cling to her like white to rice in a glass of milk on a paper plate during a snowstorm.
Admittedly, though, I don't intend for my collection to get all that big. But is nice to have a girlfriend who encourages me to impulsively buy khukris.

Also, it should be pointed out that if you end up marrying the girl, the real test is to see if she'll let you cut the wedding cake with a khuk;)

I dunno who this guy is, but I hear he's a bit scruffier looking these days. It's amazing how you tend to let yourself go when that ring gets on your finger...er, so I hear;)

he he, thats YOU steely...nice cake

Wow. That's perfect. I can saber the champagne bottle with my khuk, then cut the cake with the same knife afterwards.
You're an inspiration.
What kind of khuk is that? A YCS?

From what I hear from this...uh this guy...is that yes indeed it is a special run YCS that was sharpened by Dan Koster for this occasion. This same khuk was left in a work truck between moving from an apartment and a house where a good for nothing *&%^%worker used it to chop something on GRAVEL and put it up wet....sickening:grumpy::mad::grumpy::mad::grumpy::mad:

Nice work, MD. You're a braver soul with your khuks than I. Except that time I demolished an old VW Beetle with my Bilton. :D

That's such a shame.... I know being a gal an all that would have been something to be packed with the gifts, Hung on the wall with the Marriage cert. & Bouquet and at the time of the move.. boxed up with the same to be the first things hung up in the new place...

With Ed and I going on 8yrs. in April, I have 2 years to think up something simple to renew our vows at (since when we were married we had 2 great guys that are friends of ours Ed knew in OR stand up for us... and it was pack the truck and drive back to NJ in 3 days) So we never really had the Big... or even med. size wedding.... I can see Khuks, swords ect. being a part of the vow renewal..... that just seems to be a given.
BTW You got a beautiful gal there Steely... and the Lad in the pic isn't half bad either. :).. & It looks like ya both had a beautiful Day,
Something to be said for having spouses that support one another's hobbies.

Blessed Be
Willow

Sher makes them tough. I have a 16.5" WW2, CAK, 21" Chitlangi, and a Kumar Karda by Sher, and each one is excellent.

Steely, which part of the country was this photo taken? Very beautiful.
Reminds me of the river I grew up of in the Eastern province.

I don't know who that dashing fellow is, either.

But I'm smiling right now ... and considering where I am and what I'm doing, I'm very grateful for that smile.

May the two of you spend your whole lives together; may you know much joy.

You obviously married the right woman. I think that you've made a typo, though; please let me fix it if I may. I believe that you meant to type,

"Now I have to order an M1 Garand from the CMP so that I'll have one to go with hers."

<wink>

Great picture, Steely_Gunz.

I think it was Jeff Cooper that advised every man own one good rifle, and two Garands.

A small update to my abusive relationship with my khukris. Today I stabbed my M43 repeatedly through an old electric stove just to see if the tip would hold up.
This goes to show how far heat treatment goes. I assume the stock is 5160 steel, which is a good steel for its purpose, but nothing super specialized like ZDP-189 or CPM S110V. And yet this knife performs like magic.
Sher kami is my hero.
