My wife tells me this all the time, now she's got proof

I was doing my usual routine of preparing pins for a full tang knife. Cutting the pins short, then roughing them up. I used my knifemaker words of power (cursing) because of the small pins and my big paws. I grabbed my vise grips so I could get a better grip on the short pins, then I had an epiphany..... why not rough up the pins before I cut them. I'm an idiot, I've been roughing up short pins on 15 knives.... sigh, better late than never I guess.

Cut the shorts to length, lightly place in vise, stabilize overhanging end of pin with left fore finger and rough center portion of pin with three point file, loosen vise jaws, turn pin and repeat. You were right all along but use a vise.

I actually use my battery drill for this. I lock the pin stock in the chuck, put some 100 grit (or such) sandpaper around the pin and let fly. The battery drill also works great in my "poor man's lathe".
:D

I think roughing upm pins when cut is better, you don't risk to find a pin roughed up near the extremity, where it would leave a very bad gap bewteen pin and scale.
