Okay, so what's the catch? (Cheap blanks)

I was looking around on google and I came across this 10 inch bowie blank. Looking at the price, the little alarm bells went off in my scrutinizing little consumer mind. Such a nice looking blank, and for only 10 bucks?

Has anyone here had some experience in this area? I searched through the forums a bit, but couldn't find much. What's the catch here? Would this thing maim me as it broke after my first use? Would it even hold an edge? I mean, I know it's only 10 bucks, and some shipping fees, but it's my 10 bucks! I would rather get some good beer instead of a crappy blade that will bust on me after a careful build. Any insights would be most appreciated!

Some strong Belgian beer.... say Belle Royale....

Guinness and Killian's Irish Red are my favorites.

Thanks for re-direct, Foryou!

If anyone else knows some good places for blanks lemme know!

By "stainless" they probably mean "cheapest we could find".

Gene Martin sells blanks that are much higher quality: http://www.customknife.com/

Jarrett Knives and Koster Knives, among others, have also sold blanks in their forums here.

I have made knives from kit blades that worked ok. I have about a dozen or so in my kitchen knife drawer right now.

If you are wanting to try your hand at knifemaking - it's a lot less painful when you screw up a $10 blank than if you have to pitch a $100 one.

If you need a cheap blank, get one from Jantz Supply or Texas Knife Supply. Their stainless blades are fairly reliable. TKS does their own heat-treat, (IIRC).

If you want to have a handmade knife with your own handle on it - then get one from a custom knifemaker. Yes, I do sell blanks - I just usually don't put my mark on them...or I mark them as a kit knife (on request).

Different strokes for different folks.
