In a recent thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=316775 a subtle suggestion was that I am too ..... f u s s y ..... with my knives....EXCUSE ME......T O O L S!

So, I am forced to examine this concept.

Are you a he-man with a chunked up, stabmarked, skratchy, heavy duty, use-for-a-jack-handle ....knife?

Or are you an effiminate, mincing, hoity-toity, knife DILETTANTE?

Excuse me again......"blade appreciateur?"

Well, punk....ANSWER ME!

 :D

Yup. I'm a sissy. I have zero survival skills, I'm afraid of the dark and sometimes I hide under my bed when my son cries. I do own some knives that I like, but I'm too scared to take them out of the sheaths. I know they are nice because I see the pictures of them on the internet...

Please stop yelling, it is making me nervous... :D

heh, I know how you feel. I bought a few knives ove the summer that were too nice to use, and ended up selling them off. Now I will not own any knife that I cant use.

Later on in life when I have more (some?) expendable income I will however have as many trailer queen knives as I can.

i also like knives but can't bring myself to purchase on because i am afraid by the enormous responsibility having a sharp object in my house ! That's why i don't have heating, electricity and keep taking shallow breaths out of fear of going into hyperventilation :D

LOL

I guess I'm both... I have a couple of gift knives I won't take out except to show off but for the most part If I can't put a surgical edge on it and use it I don't want it.

Je suis un ......"blade appreciateur." I only buy art knives, preferably with precious metals or Mother-of-Pearl, and always jewel-encrusted. I cannot possibly use these treasures for crude purposes such as cutting, so I tear packages open with my teeth and open boxes with my keys.

I can only afford these beautiful masterworks if my real estate business thrives. Would you care to help me out by buying a Bridge ... ?

Unmarred, gleaming new knives make me nervous. :( Once I get a nice knick, gouge, or scratch, I can breathe easy and use it for what god, and the knife maker intended, cutting sh1+.

I prefer to use my Jewel Encrusted, Pearl Handled, Damascus Engraved Strider GB (bet you never seen one of them?) for cutting my way thru the jungle and slaying the natives...and my 440C, Plastic Handled, Fully serrated Replica Jim Bowie Knife is reserved just for carry to Church on Sundays, and the occassional trip to the Snow Cone Stand!! MUHAHAHAHAHA ;)

I personally carry the gold plated handle with pearl/abalone/black pearl/gold pearl/stag inlays! The ATS-34 plastic handle sits on the shelf.
Oh, and to church I carry the the 8 inch blade bowie with diamond inlays in an ivory handle.....

The ones in the display cases do not get used. You don't chop with an antique knife that is in mint condition. Yes, I am a collector first and user second.
Then there are some nice ones that I carry for light use. Yep, the Sunday go to meeting knives are purty.
And there are hard use knives. That is what these ones were made for.
A knife for all occations. This gives me a reason to buy more knives. :D

Well, there are a lot of people here on the forums that like to talk about how they are the bigger man because they won't buy a knife unless they use it, but what do they mean by heavy use? Do they really go chopping through forests, or punching holes in car doors, or do they really defend themselves with their big tank-like tacticals? The biggest task I ever have with a knife is cutting through plastic packages. Plastic is the most vile substance ever created. :) I myself don't have any tasks to do with a knife that my mammoth-ivory handled, stainless damascus bladed knife can't do, and therefore I am not scared at all to carry it around with me. What do people really do with a heavy use knife? Maybe I'm not enough of a man to know what people actually do with their knives.

Hum,
Since I pretty much own more using knives than a sane person should own, in my old age ;) I mostly collect M.S. test and art daggers along with multiblades.

I use the daggers to dag and the multiblades to cut the dagees into fine pieces :D. The multiblades are cool since I do not have to sharpen them between daggings. :)

Seriously, maybe I have been reading Ed Fowler too long (although I think that would be impossible), but to paraphrase one of many aspects of knives, makers and collectors that Ed speaks and writes about "There is lots of room for all types in our world of knives."

Use or collect, decked out to the hilt or utilitarian and plain - pick one or all and have fun.

I use my present knife to pry out staples, scrape glue off the table, cut-up lunch, open envelopes, open boxes....that's exactly what I bought the kabar-dozier folding hunter which cost me $17.99 for. great knife.

the sebbie (undergoing some mods now) will take its place when I'm backcountry. mostly it's there as a back-up as I would usually use a machete for most of my camp tasks...

I've got a couple that I baby namely my Mnandi w/African Blackwood inlays and a Lakeland w/beautiful MOP scales that came from Knife House Hara. Those are my office/work EDCs and I use them for opening letters, cutting strings, breaking down the occasional paper box and other mundane office duties.

hmm. now that i think about it...

CRKT M16-03 (6A) - the handle still looks great, but the blade? it's had its edge rolled countless times. the tip bent countless times. it gets put thru alot of the sh*t work around the house.
Spyderco Cricket (ATS55) - this one looks bad. clip is gone. serrations are disappearing. screws are rusting. it's my keychain knife.
Camillus Cuda Jr (154CM) - tip has been flattened. scales have paint stuck in them. blade play from prying (one of the liners was slightly bent).
Spyderco Calypso Jr (VG10) - still looks new. has only seen slicing.
Benchmade Nimravus 140 (154CM) - still looks pretty new. never really had a sheath for it, 'cause Six Feet Deep used it to roast marshmallows. so it's pretty much only seen kitchen use so far.
Camillus Arclite (D2) - all scratched up. tip flattened. edge has been rolled countless times.
Spyderco Dodo (S30V) - also pretty new looking. pretty much only been used on cardboard and leather.
Kabar/Dozier Thumb Notch Folder (8A) - in the same shape as my M16-03, only not quite.
Camillus Becker Necker (0170-6C) - it's so beat up i put it away until i have the patience to fix it.
Himalayan Imports 12" Ang Khola (5160) - scratches all over the blade from chopping and bad sharpening skills.
Himalayan Imports 15" British Army Service (5160) - haven't had much chance to use it yet. it's really purty tho. Sher did some gold inlay on the blade and put some other designs in it. i'll get around to using it, maybe. maybe i can use it to dig a hole for ice fishing (yikes).

most of the wear on my knives has come from processing the bodies of collector's i've slain. :D

I ain't no sissy. . . .but I've got sissy knives that are all dolled up and shoved behind some glass.

Christ, I likem like that ! :p

And. . . .I've gotz me some he-man knives ! But I can only use them when I'm wearin' my "he-man" uniform.

There..............I you're happy now. :p :D

Hahaha Lavan,

Interesting topic.

I used to be a person who had all my knives as safe queens (except kitchen knives and a beat-up SAK Angler for fishing) but since a few years ago, I found that the knives I put aside were actually not the ones that I like the best, and all others that I bought since that time had become hard-users for me. I'd still feel my heart is broken for a day or two if they suffered from some unintentional/accidental scratches/dents, but all others "regular" marks due to normal wear and tear or even from EDCing, those marks really make me like the knives better and I found the marks really add characters on the knives.

Once a friend said to me that she thinks the more scratches on an personal item, (not too major ones of course), the more memories she can find from it. She actually feel more attached to it, like all nicely worn-in stuff. I truly buy what she said on that. :)

Most of mine have at least a few scratches. I also like to buy used, let someone else put the scratches on it and save myself $50 or so. :)

Good Evening All-

My daily users (especially the folders) are very well-worn and scratched...but they look presentable because they are clean, polished, and honed sharp. They've been through so much, they almost have a "story" to tell. I give them the careful maintenance and lubrication they deserve.

My big Busse fixed blades show typical finish wear from normal camping/hiking activity. Some people seem to want to try and damage their blades with senseless prying games, but that seems absurd to me. I do things like prepare food, chop branches for the fire, and cut rope.

There are a couple automatics in my collection that see virtually no usage at all. They're toys that I enjoy, but not my first choice for EDC.

Amen.

(and I hope every car owned by a "users-only" knife knut here is all scratched up and has few dings in the hood and fenders - remember, they're just "tools" meant to be USED!)

;)
