The purpose of this is to request info as to which would be a better knife to take (as a private purchase) the Ontario #499, or the Camillus #5733 on deployment. I heard the butts were welded on the OKC, & thru peened on the Camillus. True or false. also what do they mean by thru peened? Photos?

General opinion on these seems to be that the Camillus version is a little higher quality than the Ontario, which has had some problems reported with the consistency of their heat treat. Take that with a grain of salt. Design-wise they are very close, though I think the Camillus has a more fragile tip. I filed mine down a bit to a more drop/spear point and prefer it that way. One problem is, Camillus is for all intents and purposes out of business and the 5733 is going to get scarce real soon. If you want one, get it now. I have one of each and prefer the Camillus, but really they are pretty close.

The tang passes through the handle inside the leather washers and through the butt cap. If you look at the end of the handle you can see the rectangular tang. The butt cap is pressed down to compress the washers and the tang is hammered to spread it out, same idea as a rivet. Now it is larger that the hole in the butt cap and locks it in place. I've never heard the Ontario's are welded, I thought they were made the same way. Sure look that way. I wonder what type of welding they could use that would not fry the leather washers, probably more high-tech than these knives would get.

Hope this helps. I'll try to post some pic's later if I get a chance.

Through-peened hafting has been used on knives and swords for centuries. If it didn't work well, it wouldn't still be used. Also, fyi, if a peened handle gets loose, all you have to do is peen it some more. Couldn't do that with a welded pommel.

A neighbor swears by okc (USMC) he claimed the tips & guard junction break on the camillus.(T/F)? Once he found out I can sharpen a knife he drafted me into doing his, the steel is butter smooth to work on. Maybe the Marines don't teach that anymore.
From what little I've seen I might go w/ the okc.

Well guess what, I was told fixed blades aren't allowed,&we also won't have bayonets. The reason is knives are dangerous (to us),& "mean looking". So I'll spend my money on another case sodbuster jr. but in ss. So the question of Camillus, or OKC is moot. I was going to get an OKC though.

Makes perfect sense, now that you probably couldn't get any guarantee on a Camillus product! Ontario can only grow from strength to strength.
