Olamic Wayfarer 247 Review
My custom one-off full size Wayfarer from Olamic has been one of my favorite knives. Its the best flipper in my collection and makes it into my EDC routine every week. So when I heard that Olamic was releasing a Compact and 247 (Twenty-four Seven) version of the Wayfarer I was excited.
The Compact version 3.5 blade was released earlier this year. It is a full custom knife, made in Visalia CA. Most are one-off orders and others are limited runs. They run from $595 and up. The 4.25 full size Wayfarer knife is a custom one-off or limited run knife. New from $645 and up.
A couple of weeks ago I was able to buy a prototype 247. Its made using Italian components and finished in California. Some scale and clip variations will be the only real options. All the blades are drop point.
The drop point has a spear-like feel to me. I really like the blade shape and geometry. There is a very slight sweg where you can run your thumb out extending over some gimping. The blade hole can be used (with practice) as an index finger flipper, but dont think that was designed as such. This is FLIPPER through and through. It runs on caged bearings that come slightly greased. A very smooth and strong firing deployment. Beautiful just right detent.
My prototype is sculptured all TI. Its blue/purple, but this color will not be offered in the production run (only as an after-market customization.). Also, my prototype is set up on standoffs while the production models will be with floating back spacers. (See photos). I have really big hands, yet the shape of the frame fits well in my hand. A really nice choil for the index finger and contoured nicely for the last three fingers.
The 247 is a frame lock while the Compact is a liner lock. The frame lock has a tab in it to avoid extending outward to far. I love the ceramic ball Begg-like clip (tip up only). The knife is shipped in a zippered Olamic container that includes a pivot tool.
PRICE: Oh, did I mention that the new 247 will be available in March 2016 starting at $375.A great price for a mid-tech Olamic.
I have provided photos that compare my 4.25 custom with my prototype 247 as well as some photos of one other 247 prototype with back spacers. I included one photo of a Compact spec sheet. Remember, the compacts are liner locks with slightly wider handles because of the construction.
You can check the dealer list at the Olamic web site for a dealer. However I like to buy from Sanford Owen, owner of Carmel Cutlery who will have some of the 247 knives soon. NOTE: This is not a solicited review and I paid for the review knife.
