The good news is that I got this 2 by 36 for free, so it is better than nothing. I ordered some belts from trugrit and it really makes profiling easy! I've always done my grinding with a file jig so this is new to me. Are there suggestions to make this better? Different platen, slow it down somehow? Thanks

How fast does it spin now? Nice find, free tools are the best.

look on the motor tag it has rpm and a number by it, 1725, 3850. looks to be about 1hp.

get me the rpm and the dia of the wheel and I will calculate belt speed in fpm for you.

4064 sfpm. a little fast for me, I would try abd find at least a 1750 rpm motor with the same frame and shaft dia 1725 with same drive pulley would yield 2032 sfpm. I run a 4 inch pulley on my only set speed grinder with 1725 and get 1806 sfpm. the other two have vfd drives and 3phase 2 and 3 hp motors. at 1806 I have to force a burn spot unless its very thin steel.

you also might try a pyroceram glass liner on the platen. I use them on all mine so far after 5 yrs on the first one no failures. it lets the belts run cooler and they seem to last a lot longer.i use a viel 2x42 to sharpen on and it has the same platen.usa and texas knifemaker carry them and jb weld to secure it to the platen.

You can Flat grind with it before HT but I wouldn't use it after HT at that speed. Or just keep it as a profiler beast until you get enough cash together to get a 2 x 72"
