i pulled this one out today to put on the Buck exchange.........but as i was setting up to take pics....i realized the softer rubber in the handle was falling out and someone had inscribed BlackHakDown on it.....looked like a kids writing......so i thought..........i probably will not get much for it like this....and it is a thick, huge, hunking piece of steel......im gonna take off the handle and see what i have to work with.......................

the hard plastic just did not want to come off......but i stayed vigilant....

i am thinking green or black micarta.........any suggestions on what would work good on this ?? i think beefy grips will be ok....instead of going with the hidded tang approach

Thank you for posting those pics. I have an old 650 too, that in the future will probably need a new handle. It helps to know what the tang looks like, good luck with your project.

i am tired ..... so now i am thinkin.....keep it as is , add kydex and a stainless ball chain and call it a big,big necker:D

Very Informative, Andy!
I think a couple of slabs of micarta are just the thing....may do that very trick when one of mine needs 'modded' :)

naw not a necker...go away from mil spec or tac some thing diff!
square off the handle shank and put in Guard... then scales ...
consiter full cover white micarta... or full ironwood even ...
no dark macarta to close to org..
stag would make a statement for sure with a set that stops 1/4 inch from edge!
gota have a guard tho!
keep us posted with pic's!

I would love to see that with some Maroon or Coral looking Micarta with a Kydex sheath. What an upgrade that would be. Please post pics when completed.

I knew this was the place to go to find this. If anybody had ever removed the handle from a Buck Nighthawk, I was 100% sure I would find pics on here.

I've got 2 650s and a 655 Short Nighthawk. I want to remove the black finish from the 655, and put on some sort of micarta scales, but I didn't want to start until I found out what the tang looked like. I don't want to just ruin a perfectly good knife, after all!

Now I know.

Up from the depths.....i found the micarta for this project but I had put it on the backburner for a couple months.......I guess its time to finish it....

this stuff is beautiful...old school brown micarta from an electrical sub station ..i dont know how old it is .. but it has some excellent layering.....

these micarta slabs are a little over3/4" thick....wow

now I got to find my mask and get to roughing a couple handle slabs out.......more pics to come..............................

Those are some THICK slabs! Definitely thicker than I'm going to use... Are you going to use the existing holes in the tang for mounting the scales?

yep that will look fine !
i truly cant recall how MUCH of that stuff i tossed away
working in high voltage at substations!!
i have seen some up to 2" thick!
if you stack it.. it takes on that stacked leather look!
yes keep us posted

You know when your done with the knife it's going to need a sheath that will be more fitting for a modded Buck such as this one...Got any ideas on that???
