in 1095 i've found a rucarta (natural micarta) and a green river bone, the micarta is the one i'll probably buy as I want a 2nd one for the one I have in the collection

I want a second one, in stainless (food) and here come's the problem as i've found a few I like

Casein doesn't have a great reputation for dimensional stability in use. Mike Stewart of Bark River tried it out on some of their knives a while back -- got a lot of them back with shrinking and curling scales. It's not a material he would ever use again. It's basically a "plastic" made from a coagulated milk protein. The micarta will be by far more durable.

casein is definitely a rare baby. we have several polymer experts in our group which may enlighten us .joebob may also have the skinny on this model.

I have one of the white casein #73s. It is beautiful stuff, but the scales on mine have shrunk considerably- it has developed gaps at the bolsters. I would not recommend it. The sad part is, the knife with those scales otherwise is the nicest of all my GEC #73s. It has the best F&F and blade action of them all. I may have to get it rescaled at some point.

I actually have all three versions shown in the OP. I don't think you can go wrong with either the goldenrod or the Green Tea. They're both nice. The micarta-scaled versions weigh a little bit less than the ones with bone scales, FWIW.

I should also note, since you're wanting to use these, that casein can stain relatively easily - that was a big selling point of casein plastic buttons way back -- manufacturers could stain them whatever they wanted on short notice to match their cloth.

micarta goldenrod is ahead in this moment
well have time to decide

thanks for the hints about the casein!!!

I own a goldenrod micarta one and it's beautiful. It was a toss-up between that and the black paper micarta for me.

do you have any pics? would like to see a big one but only found small pics

i'll go 73 1095 micarta
73 440c goldenrod micarta
