So far in my initial handle assemblies I have been using some old Devcon (30 min) epoxy (15 years old???). so far it has seemed to behave just fine - but as I move in to working on blades that I intend to give to friends/family, I am wondering about getting some GFlex. Many of the makers here seem to recommend it .... but the Devcon I believe (??) is also frequently used (I did originally buy the Devcon from a knife making supply house).

I am less worried about the age (many say unopened epoxy resin and hardener has a shelf life of several decades - and as I said so far it appears to be performing well). I am more interested/concerned about overall performance of the two. Is the GFlex in general known to just out perform the Devcon???

Old Devcon epoxies are not going to get fill strength. Some have much longer lives. System Three and West System have a very long shelf life … but 15 years is probably asking for a joint failure. G-flex is an excellent resin for knives.

I would get some new stuff, mostly as an excuse to get some 24 hour epoxy. Slower drying epoxy is stronger, and i haven't found a longer drying time to be a problem.

^^^ Yes! 24h G-Flex by www.westsystem.com is the only one I’ll use, Any old epoxy 3 years or older should just be thrown away. Unless you want the knife coming back to you because moisture got under the scales & rust pushed them apart..

All I know is that when I use g-flex epoxy it sticks to my plastic applicator and is a bear to get off the applicator. The other epoxy's I have are stiff and peel off the applicator easily. I wind up wiping extra gflex off my applicator now so I can reuse it...cuz it isn't coming off after it sets.
