Old American knives, What steel did they use?

Does anyone here know what steel the old "traditional" style folders were made of? Specifically, what steels did companies like Camillus, Schrade, Boker, and others use when they made most of there products here in the U.S.A. in the 1940's and 1950's? My best guess was some kind of carbon steel.

Note: They all appear to have used something similar (My observation, I might be wrong), hence the reason why I am posing this question in the General Discussion, and not the collectors forums.
