I've never liked AutoCAD for 3d stuff, but it does come in handy for 2D layout. This will hopefully be my first knife:

How difficult is it to learn CAD?

With the manual and the software, you can learn basic CAD commands and be productive with it within a week; that applies to all CAD programs, not just AutoCAD, since they're all very similar.
Like anything else, the more time you spend on it, the better you get, the more you know.

i forgot to mention that i did everything in 2D. each of the views was drawn seperately. took about 5 days in class to draw that one up. im still trying to find someone with a 250MB zip drive so i can see if i still have the original drawing.

Sparks, AutoCAD and the other CAD programs arent that hard to learn. if you get autocad i can teach you some shorthand commands. i sent a copy of my AutoCAD 2007 to a friend for him to try out. the software is pricey but i wouldnt mind making a copy for you to try out and learn. let me know if you are interested.

just curious maybeso, why don't you like autoCAD for 3d? I've made all sorts of things in 3d for our cnc router at school and I like autoCAD a lot better than the 3d program we got for doing that stuff. Although currently I'm doing the most time consuming project I've ever done, making a 3d face out of mesh :barf:

It's been a long time since I tried 3D stuff in AutoCAD... Maybe they've streamlined and made it easier since I last tried. My work doesn't require it, so I guess I just haven't found the need to pursue it. I suppose I should revise my previous statement to "I don't use AutoCAD for 3D because I don't have to"!

Isn't making a copy for him and sending it out illegal? I would think the manufacturer of that program would consider that stealing.

what i meant by that is they can use it on a trial program and if they like it they can purchase it. some (well maybe alot) of people are afriad to get it cause of how much it costs and they arent sure if they will be able to use it and if they would like it. thats why im offering them a trial period. if they dont like it or can figure it out even after a little help and coaching then they dont have to waste $4000 on something they will never use. thats my reasoning behind it.

Please don't advertise that you'll break the law, mkay?

I have worked with AutoCad for years and often they have demo discs available for people to"try out". I work in offices that have licenses for many "seats" and what that means is Autodesk will only allow that number of systems to be used at once. It is also acceptable, as I understand it, to have a program loaded at home, because it would not be used while others are using it.

I don't think Autodesk cares about people trying out the software. When they do care is when someone is using it to make money.

Jacob sent me a copy to check out. I'm currently using an old copy of Autocad lite I got years ago. I think I want to upgrade to the full version (paid), but wanted to check it out first to see if I needed the full feature set before purchasing...

Jacob: delete this part about me above before someone gets the wrong idea, I don't want anyone to think I "steal" software, that's not a cool thing to do.
