Well the replies that I recieved about the snow and nealley axes has turned me off from them. So I still need an axe and trying to decide what to get? I do know that Granfors makes that best axes now but I cannot outlay the money right now. I commonly have seen axe heads at auctions and like. Is there some older brands that were made of excellent steel? How do I identify them? Thank you

Keen Kutter and Dunlap are two oldies that fit in the "pretty good" if not excellant catagory.
Good luck in your search.

Norlund made pretty good axes. They show up on eBay and are reasonable with replacement handles. I think there's one on eBay now.
