I have had this for 40 years and the guy I got it from maybe 20. So this is at least 60. I never used it, had it hanging vertical in the garage, they say the gravitational forces will prevent warping if ya hang them like that. This one is straight , very nice piece of wood. Double straight wedges holding the head on, and it’s solid. Anyone seen this brand before? How old might this axe actually be? Any clue on the value? I tried to get decent pics, the image sizer sure chops off some of the pic.

Gebrüder Busch, Remscheid

Busch Brothers, Remscheid

company history

"FW Busch, tool factory. Founded in 1806 by Friedr. Wilh. Busch, who sold the business to Fr. Wilh. Busch junior in 1850. The following are manufactured: plane irons, chisels, files, saws and other tools and 20 workers are employed." 1)

According to the data of FA Nolte 3) the founder Friedrich Wilhelm Busch lived from 1785-1857, his son of the same name from 1822-1896.

Friedrich Wilhelm Busch Jr. presumably ran the factory until 1892, as a note in a company catalog from 1938 suggests:
"Our company, which before 1892 bore the name of the company founder FW Busch, which our factory sign still indicates today, was founded on the occasion of the takeover by two brothers in 'Gebr. Busch' changed."
According to an entry in an address book from 1899, the partners in the company are Ernst (1855-1910) and Hermann (1850-1897) Busch. 3) Her brother Paul (1867-1924) probably also joined the company around this time (after Hermann's death?).

The company name information is somewhat contradictory. Contrary to what is stated in the above catalogue, the trademark applications from 1875 and 1885 (see below) have already been made for the Busch brothers. The Remscheid address book from 1884 2) also contains the following entry:
"Gebrüder Busch (owner Fr. Wilh. Busch), Blumenstr. 24."

Many sources give 1780 as the year of foundation. However, the founder Friedrich Wilhelm Busch (1785-1857) had not yet been born at that time. The beginnings of the company probably go back to his father Johann Wilhelm Busch (1740-1824, chisel smith in Remscheid).

The company still exists and is now part of the Wilh group of companies. Schmitt & Comp. .
