Old bakelite welding goggles

A buddy of mine sent me some old Bakelite Jackson Products welding goggles. Does anyone have any experience with these goggles?

It looks like there is a clear outer lens and a tinted inner lens. The outer lenses are all chipped up from welding splatter. Does anyone know how I can remove these lenses and slap in some new ones?

It looks like the threads that attach the lens to the eye cup run down through the base of the lens, but I can’t get them to move or unscrew. My next thought is to try and pry the lenses out by wedging the tip of a butter knife along the threads, but I’d like to avoid breaking anything.

I know nothing about welding goggles. That said, i would think the lenses just tap out the inside. They may be stuck.

I think you might try some (very!) gentle heating with a hair dryer or a heat gun. To change lenses in old plastic Ray Bans (like Wayfarets) you would do just that. You need to figure out if there is a lip holding the lense from both sides, then gently warm it up and pop it out. Do not overheat or you will deform the bakelite. Maybe youtube has some tips for you.

Freddy, Baketile won't soften with heat.

I have an old pair out in the shop as wall décor. I'll try and take a look and see how the lenses are installed.

I thought they were just held in when the outer part was screwed on the base. Once removed from the base, I think they push from the outside back toward the threaded area. Maybe soaking them in hot soapy water would loosen them up.

Thanks Stacy, OP please ignore my comment, i made a blind assumption that bakelite will be similiar to newer plastics in this regard.

Thanks guys, I’ll try soaking them and tapping them out.

After washing both eye pieces one of them got water between its lenses. So there has to be some wiggle room somewhere.

A few min of soaking in warm soapy water did the trick!

Just had to feel around the lens a bit while pushing near the edge and they came out no problem. The rubber ring that sat between the lenses is rock hard, not sure if that’s what was giving me trouble or if the lenses are just a very tight fit.

Thanks again
