Old Bone Repair?

I'm looking at buying an old 1980's folder with bone covers. One spot in the bone, at/near the bolster, about 1/4" in diameter, has a small chip out with some probable flaking nearby. Its kind of hard to tell exactly whats going on from the pics.

What material would I want to use to make a solid, one time repair? I want to fill in all the voids, stabilize the area, and have it smooth on the surface (sandable). Looks aren't critical, as this will be a user.

Bill, thanks for the help. I'll bet thats the best stuff for the job.
Are you taking about "clear polyester casting resin"? Sorry, but I'm not very knowledgeable about the subject. If so...it looks like the smallest quantity I can get is about $16+, more than what I want to spend on a relatively cheap knife and be left over with $15 worth of stuff I wouldn't use.

Any other ideas? I was thinking maybe of using one of those little $5 epoxy kits...

I think it's actually more expensive than that.
But, it's a really good glue, and you can cast bugs into "ice cubes" and stuff!
Most run of the mill epoxies will not really harden enough to polish.
But- you said this will be a user, you could try plumber's epoxy. It's dark grey/black, but it's less expensive than the other stuff.

Get superglue from a dollar store in the eye dropper squeezy sort of bottle. Apply a few drops at a time and then sprinkle with ordinary baking soda.
There's a lot of info on this all over the web, review it and decide for yourself if that's suitable. I personally think any form of good epoxy would be superior. For one I do not know when I might grab the knife with acetone on my hands and dissolve the superglue.

Thanks for the tip. Read up on it a bit and sounds like a good fix, for cheap, fileable, and paintable.

Ended up sleeping on the bidding, so didnt get the knife, a "new" old S&M whittler for $15 or 20 I think:mad:, but would like to try that on something else sometime.
