Old Buck Strider question....

The local Mom and Pop sporting goods store had some knives traded in, one was an older Buck Strider (at least is said so on the blade) It was a folder...a MASSIVE tanto folder. About 9"-liner lock-- Look like G-10 scales. The blade had to be 3/16 or thicker. The tanto tip wasn't super sharp, but looked like it was made to puncture!! It was a TANK! Very solid.

It was new in the box, but the box wasn't "perfect". Priced at about $100--Is this something I should rush back and buy?

Thanks.

I didn't post an actual price, and I didn't post the store selling it. Thought I was okay. I hate to throw money away!

You may be able to get an idea of what they are selling for by searching under completed auctions in ebay.

Ebay can't tell me if it's a good knife--if they were problematic--- or a pile of junk.

Just give me the name of that "Mom & Pop" sporting goods store and I'll swing by and check it out for you.....:D
I will let you know by email if I think I got a good buy or not.....

LOL!-- I doubt it is close enough to you (Desoto) to bother with! :D

Well worth $100,they do have some issues though, like blade play, and a lock bar that wears prematurely. The knife is one that is getting harder to find.I would guess it to be a buck strider 880 tanto folder, does it have really rough scales and one thumb stud,or dual thumb studs?Single studs are the original model before some changes were made,ie:smoother scales and dual thumb studs. Also look to see if its ats -34 or bg-42 steel.GOOD LUCK.

I remember it was ATS 34 (same as my Junglee) Not sure about the studs though.

Well, the 880T is a big stout clunky folder. It was loosly based on the Strider BG IIRC which was a sharpened prybar style combat utility folder. I have a 880T, 880S, and an 881T. I carried the 880S as my EDC in Baghdad in 04/05 and it was an outstanding knife. That said, the 880T is a big heavy folder and rides great in a BDU pant pocket but sucks in a pair of jeans and in a pair of slacks no way. the blade is thick with a thick edge. That makes them tuff but not hair popping sharp and the tip on the tanto point is very strong but the trade off is an almost dull forward tanto edge. Great for prying and thrusting but not so great for cutting. The spearpoint model was considerably better. I paid $75 for mine off the exhange here before I deployed. I picked up the 880T for the same price at a Buck factory store sale in 2006. IMO these were a great military hard use knife and a great alternative to spending $300 plus for a Strider folder. If I really wanted another one I would probably spend $100 on one if it were NIB. I think the Buck/Strider Tarani knives and the Buck Bravo were better "tactical" Buck folders.

Thanks for posting. I might just swing by there!! :) But, I already have a sharp pry bar (BK2) I guess I'll have a folding pry bar too!!!!
