I recently picked up an old butcher knife, circa 1950s, at a flea market. It's your standard wooden handled knife that every home had. Tonight I took some steel wool to the rust and ran it over a stone and some crock sticks and this thing took an incredible edge. If this wis a little thicker it might make a great camp knife. Anyone know what type of steel was used in prestainless butcher knives? Also were they heat treated?

Most of the elderly gentlemen that give me unsolicited advice at the gun shows tell me it is 1095. Whatever it is it works good and stays straight. Bruce
