I got two stockmans in a trade. Both have bone handels. One looks like it has never really been used, and the other looks like it has been in someone pocket for the last 20 years. The bone scales are worn and look really nice. They were a little dried out, so I soaked the knife in oil over night. They look good and bright. After a good sharpen all three blades pop hair, and push cut news paper. The only problem I have is the main blade has a chip in it right in the middle. This knife dates to 1981 by the tang stamp. Should I send it in to get the blade replaced? I like how the patina matches all the other blades, and it has the tang stamp with the dot system. The only thing is that nick drives me crazy. Should I just keep using it until it sharpens out (I dont want to sit and sharpen it out because that would be a wast of a good bit of blade. )

Thanks,
John

Man that is one hard decision to have to make.. I have a nice old Schrade Barlow with the secondary pen blade with the same problem..

After a little thought about this dilemma, I say deal with it and use that blade to cut stuff when you can (for instance: rope, string, parcels, envelope's, packages, gardening issues, ect, ect.). After that, then sharpen it every so often until its nick-free.

Good Luck & God Bless,

If it was me,I would just use it,I really like there cv,and to me the older is better, sharpens really easy, while there newer knives with cv are exelent I would enjoy using the old knife the way it is.And once you wear it out, then get the blade replaced:)

Just use it. In time it will fade, but I think I would take a stone and maybe smooth out the nick a little if it has any sharpe corners that may act as a stress line. Is the nick a definate V shape of any size, or just a very small nick?

Well it is a V shape, and goes into the blade about 1/16 of an inch. I have sharpened it, but not sure as to the stress area you mentioned. Thanks for the advise, I will just use the knife as it takes a great edge. Maybe a year or two of working with it the notch will be gone.

Thanks,
John

If it was me i'd just live with it until it sharpens out. this is a user not a looker right so don't sweat it. better yet send it to me and i'll carry it and sharpen it for a few years then send it back to you, yeah that's the ticket. ahgar
