Old coins?

I've got about 20 old silver half-dollars. Anyone suggest a site that will help me determine their value? Or if anyone here knows about that type of thing I can give you the details.

Value is going to be dependant on year and condition. You are probably best off going down to your local library, and seeing what they have for coin value guides (for US coins). Get the most recent that they have. This may be a check-out item, or reference only. You may want to bring the coins with you, so you can sit down with the guide, and look them up- if it is reference only.

Here's a website that gives coin values but without knowing what the prices mean,it probably won't help much,http://www.mycoincollecting.com/.Like mp510 said value depends a lot on condition.Right know silver is only at about $11.00 an ounce so that's about the lowest they would be worth.A couple months ago it was near $20.00,but good coins, especially if they are anything rare will be worth a lot more.

I just reread your post also,I was thinking you had silver dollars, halves are less and if they are newer than 1940 aren't worth much more than face value.

Check these guys out for an online grading guide...

Thanks for the link, but I can't make heads or tails of that. (pun)

I have been looking around a bit, but it is tricky. Two coins that look exactly the same, perhaps one year apart, have vastly different values because of where they were struck. I'm not trying to nickle and dime a coin dealer (pun), but I'd like to have an idea of what I have.

LOL!!! It is a little difficult at first, but read the page on how to use the guide and it becomes somewhat clearer... I'm not too big on coins, but my Father was... And my younger brother has used that site to figure out a ball park worth to his collection... A lot of it is subjective, especially in assigning a state of condition to a coin... Which I always found amusing, as I couldn't tell much difference between some of the ones I look at...

So, tell us what coins you have, their dates and mint marks, and maybe someone can jump in and direct you to a ballpark estimate...

Looking at the PCGS site, the halves look like they are at 12x face for circulated coins. The dealer will offer you less, mostly because he has to be able to sell them at a profit.

Check the major online auction site for something like "junk silver" or "junk halves", and see what they are going for on there. You might be able to get close to 12x face or more.
