I was thinking about picking up a chopper type knife of late to carry in my backpack as me and the wife spend more time on the trail. It dawned on me that I have a Cold Steel Master Bowie in Aus 8 with a convex grind that I traded into from Glockman99 12 or more years ago. Just wondered how this knife would fare with some of the more modern choppers in the under. $200 range.

I should perform well compared to things in that price range. If you look into getting something else I would look at the Buck Hoodlum, I really like mine.

Yes it is nice to buy a higher quality knife for the outdoors at times. But I bet that many needs are filled with something much cheaper like a Condor machete. Some of them are very stout and made from thicker stock, or thinner, if you wish.

The Cold Steel TrailMaster is a good knife. But if your just wanting to try something different & you want a "Big" knife, look at the KaBar/Becker BK9
here is mine -

I also like the Condor HudsonBay (Awsome knife & awsome price). Here is my brothers with my BK2

Your Trailmaster is great. Its a much better knife than anything from Condor in that size range.
It will work fine, you shouldn't need to buy anything different if you don't want to. Since you have had this one for 12 years, I assume you don't buy a ton of fixed blades to begin with. So you made a good choice all those years ago!

I have a Trailmaster and i can tell you i'd take a BK9 over it *anytime* - anyone wanna trade?!? The Trailmaster is a good knife no doubt to that, but there are some things i think the Becker would do better.
