Old Collins homestead 3 1/2 axe find

The eye only has a wood wedge to no metal. 32"long handle. Also on the poll it says 3/12

Went to a yard sale today and picked up this Ol axe with what looks like the http://http://original handle. If any one knows for sure please let me know. I paid a wopping $10 bucks and couldn't be happier
yep, that was a steal. nice looking handle and pretty fine chopper too for less than the price of a replacement handle.

That's awesome, I have the exact same head that was my great-grandfathers. The profile is awesome, and the steel seems great 👍 unfortunately mine had an unusable sawn off handle and I still haven't gotten a proper handle for it yet as I currently don't have a need for a 3.5lb axe.

. . .

It sure appears to be an original Collins handle. If it's original to the head is another question.

Great looking axe - you did good.

Yeah not sure it's original or not but the fit is so perfect I gotta believe it is. Or a true craftsman hung this handle.

that handle was made back in the days when the handle makers really knew what they were doing and cared about quality and their customers expected tools to be as good as they could be.

I've had several of those pass through. They are nice handl;es with a good fawns foot.

Seeing the original handle really makes me even more reluctant to hang mine on just any handle.

Most of these are 'Mann era' Collins axes. The 'Homestead' is their home owner quality line - similar to a Kelly Woodslasher. They're great compared to modern import stuff but they're not top shelf axes either.

I'm pretty sure These Michigan's aren't Mann edge era as they have convex cheeks and no blue paint. I know mine is from a different time period as the op's as it has finer letters to the stamp, but who knows if it's later or earlier.

They were in all the hardware stores in the 70's and 80's.

But we're they unpainted heads with convex cheeks ? as far as I know the convex cheeks went away when Mann acquired Collins. I know that the homestead line was a very common one for Mann, but Collins had been using it for quite a long time before Mann acquired them.

Mann made lots of Homestead Michigans. Here are two that I have owned.

If we are sharing Collins with the Homestead labels then here are two as well. I did not take care to keep the label remnants on either, especially on the second one pictured – for good or bad.
