Old Competition Finish vs New

I've been debating now quite seriously whether I should get the FMV8 in competition finish, which I have not had before. Does anybody have input on what the most current version of this finish is like? Is it like the older original that some were finding issues with or is it improved from that? I think there BURP overruns had the comp finish.. just looking for some user input,

Thanks

I think the “issues” people had with them in the past was on the secondary market where people were thinking it was akin to satin where it isn’t a satin finish. There were dimples and such and people were sending them in to get “fixed”

I can’t speak to the new version, but this is just my understanding of the past and why it went away

Isn’t the comp finish just uncoated?

If so should it be less expensive? How was it before?

Just curious pretty sure I’m in for a FMV8 with comp and some G10 variety

When CF was first released, with the sarsquatch, hell razor and satin jack tac, Jerry literally paid no attention to the bulk of the steel. The edge however was a perfect zero-edge, polished and hair-popping sharp.

The decarb layer was left on the heat treated steel and it was prone to rust. A lot of rust. Folks didn’t like rust on their knives and sent them back for spa treatments and decarb removal. Rework was time consuming and expensive.

Later CF blades spent more time on removing the decarb and less on the edge. These were knives like the TGLB, BWM, etc. Jerry discontinued CF citing they were too much work.

I would have expected a bit more of a price bump for the newer CF on the dagger, particularly with the CBT grind. He must have improved his processes.

I’m not complaining. I’m really glad they’re back.

Do like me, get one CF and one Coated. If the CF annoys you, you're guaranteed to make your money back on the Exchange from the millions of people that regret not buying it the first time around.

Along these lines, have the grinder gremlins on coated blades gotten worse over time? This is mostly anecdotal, and also based on what I've heard from others, and I know it has been discussed before, but it just seems like there are lots more of them showing up on blades from the last two years than prior to that.

The recent CF seems to insure that you won't get those excessive grinder marks, but maybe I'm incorrect on this assumption.

Plus one to apocs theory. If your thinking coated and may want to strip later on just get the cleaner blade already stripped and you wont be taking a chance on heavy machine marks. If you want coated for life no strippy then go for that.

Older cf was rougher, sometimes had deep scratches or hash marks. The newer comp finish looks alot cleaner. Also if availible on a model the blades that come out near perfect are reserved for satin.

Originally comp finish was the same cost as coated. Now it is an up charge, perhaps more refined though.

Current Comp - Jerry said there will be zero fugly Gremlins. Light machine marks and INFI Dimples only.
Competition finish!

It's like a satin finish with light machining marks!

Coated Blades - Total crap-shoot.
I stripped an original NMFBM and she was BEAUTIFUL under the coating.
I stripped a DTBM, BG-AK, AA, Battle Shark, and CG BB-13 from O2W. Except for the Battle Shark, they all had at least some Gremilin marks on them, but the CGBB-13 was the fugliest I've ever seen under the coating.

This round, I decided if I can't get/afford Satin, BIG, or Comp, I'm passing on the blade.
Everything I've ordered so far has been BIG/Comp. and I'm expecting AWESOME!!! Just look at the Comp BURP's!!:thumbsup:
